maybe a stupid question but lately when writing basslines when i put a bit of stereo on them they sound better....well on my headphones anyway.

well..its not a rule and just my point of view..but human ear cannot really recognize the lower subs of the bass in any direction anyway..and cause the bass got a lot of energy its quite comfortable to make it mono so you wouldn`t mess up stereo space...but sure you could send the same signal to a stereo return and pan it a little and i do hicut on that stereo track..depends on the bass but somewhere at 200hz usually..and even think of mono compatibility..if your bass is full stereo f.e. you could loose a lot of the actual sound when switching to mono..

good luck!           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

bass should be mono - nothing to say that the uppers of a bass part should be though.           .

it might cause sum sort of phase cancelation, so maybe seperate the highs and lows and do like what speakafreaka says           [[[G|L|I|T|C|H]]]

If you want a bass stereo, paqn it hard left, sent to an aux which is then panned hard right andjust add a minimal Phaser (stereoizer) and the cancellation issue is dealt with. Bass can definitely be stereo...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

alright galactico,
i think bass sounds better in mono, but there is no rule, you listen to some morning psy tracks and some have stereo chorus on bass (sounds a bit too 80s to me).
most vst bass synths come out of stereo tracks (exception of bass station etc), but with no stereo effects and panning etc they have no stereo width so its effectively just a mono sigal through a stereo channel.
so whats the difference when we bounce this type of sigal down to mono? there is little if no difference, sometimes maybe a slight variation in volume (1-2dB).
there is NO change in quality warmth etc, compression does that.
it doesn't matter whether ya bass is mono or stereo, as long as it bangin.

my conclusion is,
we should remember that bass is just 1 element in trance, there is so much more to psy-trance than a bassline.

and it probably sounds better through your headphones as stereo because the stereo image is very exaggerated in headphones

The difference is that the file will be mono,The volume will increase 3db as the intensity is doubled, so attenuate by 3 db if you want the same level. Also there will definitely be a change in quality to the sound if you bounce it from stereo to mono.

Chorus? Stereo? Why not. But newer on low frequency!!
Lowest freqs must be always in mono (like Kick), it's a rule.

Send bass to aux channel, add eq with highpass and add chorus.

There you go Elad. That is excactly it. Why a bass always mono? Now with a kick that goes without saying, not with a bass...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

bass frequencies below a certain point are essentially omnidirectional. stereo effects can best be created by applying stereo widening only to frequencies above a certain level; experiment with cloning bass channels and sweeping filters and you'll see that you don't need to go very low to give the illusion of huge stereo bass, even when the meat of the bassline is in mono.
