Is the Hammerfall DSP + Multiface still the king?

Hi. Earlier this year I asked about the ultimate soundcard and although there were many responses and many great soundcards mentioned, it was pretty clear that the RME Hammerfall DSP + Multiface was the winner.

Now, this year has seen the release of some wicked Firewire Interfaces (i.e. Motu 828mkII, Digi 002 rack etc..) and these little numbers are a terribly tempting option, what with their plug and play-ability (i.e. no seperate soundcard for my laptop), the built in pre-amps and so on.

BUUUUUUUUUUT! For some reason, I'm still reluctant to choose one of these firewire beasties over the good ol' hammerfall. I know the hammerfall has no pre-amps and is a PCI card (although there's the cardbus version, but that's another story cause I'm running my laptops Firewire HDD on a firewire cardbus).

Something inside is just telling me to get the hammerfall. I feel like I'm going to get the motu 828mkII home and be dissapointed because I didn't get the hammerfall. I'm using a PC (P4 1.6Ghz, 1GB RAM, 2x 120GB HDDs, Windows XP, logic 5.5) and motu have primarily developed their flagship sequencer (Digital Performer) for the Mac and I've got a feeling that the 828mkII's performance on PC won't be as good as the hammerfall.

What I really want/need is a rock solid soundcard that can do it's job, not click and pop (under normal, reasonable situations - cause of course I know you can make any soundcard buckle with enough reverb plugins), and just sound perfect, clear, and be the foundation of my studio for years to come.

Is the Hammerfall DSP + Multiface the best option? Am I wrong? Please give me your advice, tell me of your experience, back me up or set me straight!!! The time has come for me to buy the soundcard that will stay with my studio for years to come. It will be.....

MY PRECIOUS!!!

thanks,

joey

For a Desktop solution go for PCI.... it's great.

if u got a laptop also, and u want to switch the soundcard between the studio and the laptop.... go for the FireWire which is exactly for that.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...
