Is streaming over the net a prog or background service?

network connection is a backround service but ur browser is a program!
also a firewall/antivirus is a backround service but with a high demand on cpu/ram

What exactly do you mean 'background' service ? A service that is usually just running silently in the 'background' and does'nt necessarily have a front end gui that it depends on for instruction ?

Streaming audio on websites is done either through flash/java applets, or through the launch of an external audio application (media player/winamp) etc..

indeed so that is always wise to set ur processor scheduling to backround services! in windows at least!

i think colins answer was for audio production apps and not for internet audio players!

yes, if u are the broadcaster.. shoutcast/oddcast etc.
ya its a background service i would say as well
