I'm in complete agreement with mk47 about mixing psytrance.
I always felt DJ tricks take something away from the tracks and only serve to bring attention to the DJ. (which inevitably leads to ego masturbation)
I don't want to know who's spinning until after the set or after the party. No mid set gratification.

Drop the next track in at the right moment and stand back. "Proper hectic psytrance" is perfectly well put.

Basically like a human juke box.

No, like a Human jukebox.. DJs that jackoff on the mixer are doing nothing to make the music better. Just make the music flow and leave ego at home!

But no one seems to have any problem with producers doing the same thing?

Producers who, mostly, reuse the same sounds invented by other producers years ago, but in slightly different ways.

You can identify producers who churn out cookie cutter crap. I guess you can spot DJs who play music (somebody else's, BTW) to collect adoring looks from the audience.

Whether this double-standard you mentioned exists or not and whether it is as unfair as you think - would you wanna be in any of these poser groups?

It's like we'd discuss common theives and you would come here and say: "Hey, what about them politicians getting away with the same shit?" Good point, but it doesn't make a thief any less of an asshole.

Well, you either like the producer's music or you don't. So you buy their CD or pay to see them play (live) or you don't.
When I go to a party to hear psytrance tracks spun by a DJ, I want to hear psytrance tracks spun by a DJ. All I'm saying is present them well.
And for gods sake, don't cut out the kick so much.

What are you talking about?
With a possible exception of house, techno is the oldest surviving EDM genre.

Today's "techno" is essentially minimal tech house and not pure techno.

I'm not saying it's bad music, I like some of it

it's just very different from what has been considered "techno" until recently.

kickass

On topic: Ever DJ has his/her own style of mixing, different sets of sounds & skills. Some like experimenting with sounds & techniques, some don't. You can find many who mix trance like techno & many who mix techno like trance. You can find many who mix trance like trance & many who mix techno like techno. So, what matters is what's your pick, what do you like! Go for what you like & ignore what you don't.          We were born naked & grow up to become wicked.

My favorite style of mixing is to take the artist's preferred version of the track and extend it from the beginning and end, and use that extended version to blend slowly from one track to another.

The downside to this style is that if you start w/ 8 min long tracks, you end w/ 10 min long tracks
