Huge generalization, but does anyone know what I mean? The way I feel it, techno is about the beats, trance is about tone and where it goes (you along with it). |

yes, i see this happening quite much and it's something i enjoy much. it makes the music more rythmic and it's a way to unlock from the older recipes and combine older technics with the modern ability to listen and tame the sub regions of mixes. |

mixed as mixing two tunes together in a set? or mixing as in the way producers mix a track in the studio?

maybe about dj mixing techniques ? like in boring blip blop music theres these apparently very long mixes(im not a dj i onli heard from dj folk) with lots of scope for improvisation , or what ,, i guess proper hectic psytrance dont really need the dj tricks , or maybe some do some cool tricks with that as well ... dunno
whats saying ... aerosis ??

"proper hectic psytrance"
proper trance is not hectic, in my opinion
I do agree with the sentiment that techno is about transients and trance is about tones, but it seems that people don't agree so much anymore. |

I'm in complete agreement with mk47 about mixing psytrance.
I always felt DJ tricks take something away from the tracks and only serve to bring attention to the DJ. (which inevitably leads to ego masturbation)
I don't want to know who's spinning until after the set or after the party. No mid set gratification.
Drop the next track in at the right moment and stand back. "Proper hectic psytrance" is perfectly well put.

The art of a dj is to mix, not only music tracks, but to also change music tracks with your mixing in such a way that you create something new, without being overbearing and with the ability to keep a certain flow. There is not much to "dropping in a new track and standing back", anyone can do that, to mix in such a way that you really create something new that has bite and works for the audience without being over the top is an art. Tricks and crazy stuff is great as long as it serves that purpose, that to me is a good dj !

Funny how some people haven't understood the meaning of trance. Beat-mixing is a way to make the trance influence even stronger.
"The usage of repetitive rhythms to induce trance states is an ancient phenomenon. Throughout the world, shamanistic practitioners have been employing this method for millennia. Anthropologists and other researchers have documented the similarity of shamanistic auditory driving rituals among different cultures.
Said simply, entrainment is the synchronization of different rhythmic cycles. Breathing and heart rate have been shown to be affected by auditory stimulus, along with brainwave activity. The ability of rhythmic sound to affect human brainwave activity, especially theta brainwaves, is the essence of auditory driving, and is the cause of the altered states of consciousness that it can induce.
The music genre of Trance music is supposed to have the same effect on the human mind as military drums, causing listeners to dance in unison with simple movements including head bobs, light bouncing/jumping and humming"
If you want train-wreck mixing or floating mixing you should not call the DJ sets "trance"... Now that I think about it all the layers of melodies etc. does not have much to do with trance. Trance is best triggered via repetitive drumming and not a million breaks, fluffy melodies etc. That's why Techno is way more trance than psytrance ever was. IMO.

I agree with Beat Agency, I have "tranced out" way more to techno, minimal and acid techno sets that to actual psy trance.
My impression of a proper trance set has been that it should be a single kick continuously going with the psychedelic sounds a round it.
I saw Psykovsky live earlier this year do a 6 hour live/dj set. I absolutely love the music and had a great time, but it just had no effect at all on me trance wise.
I enjoyed basically the technicality of what he was doing, and also it clicked with much more my glitch & industrial tastes than anything trance inducing.
Years ago when I did a set in Nepal (1999), this wizened old man came up and asked me what music it was that i was playing (it was goa trance) and I told him it was trance music, and he just laughed and said that us young people have no idea what real trance music nor the trance experience was.
I had to agree, because from all of my experiences the goa scene was about the psychedelic experience, not the traditional trance experience.
My last amazing electronica trance experience was a very long time ago seeing D.A.V.E. The Drummer & The Geezer do live acid techno sets!
I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy! |

the kick doesn't have to be constant, as long as its coming and going is gradual and not sudden |

Love his sets, last time I saw him was 7 floors beneath the ground in a the car park of an old abandoned fire brigade station in Totenham Court Road. Slammin music and well psychedelic, ihmo...although very hard at times...but with all that k served at the bar, it was a piece of cake ..went to the techno party on a sunday night after leaving a psy-trance party....the techno party lasted for 2 straight days and nights.
