PCMCIA is very much like a PCI bus and is sure the most capable connection on a laptop.

Like I said in the USB discussion, I use a PCMCIA-PCI box called magma.
Although a quite costly solution it's really great if you want a quality portable studio.
In the box you can use Pulsar, UAD-1, pro-tool and i belive also powercore.
That will enable you to get very good quality synthesis/fx but still remain portable.
On my laptop the pulsar runs just as well as when stuck directlty into a PCI slot in a desktop.

If it's straight audio i/o your'e after there exists quality firewire interfaces that works very well.
Main thing is looking on efficiency of drivers, audio quality and how many channels i/o and in what formats you need them.
RME has very good drivers and good audio quality and probably i/o options that should be suitable for most.
If your looking for straight i/o card try to go with RME PCMCIA solution i would say.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

i own a echo ingigo dj souncard and i must say that its the best laptop solution i founded so far and i have tried several firewire interfaces like m audio and motu mkII which i use for studio work, but for laptop nothing comes close to this little indigo card. its a cheap card but the performance is excellent!! even better than the motu for vst, well at least on pc plataform... if u use mostly software i highly recommend it ..cubase and ableton love are solid asa rock!! if u record hardware instrumments theres also the indigo in out... peace

CardBus is using the PCMCIA slot, but you might be right that it's different implementations of the port.
I think most soundcards using the PCMCIA connection is CardBus though.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

I use the PCMCIA Digigram VXPocket v2 and it rocks. It has 2 analog xlr inputs \ outputs, digital in \ out, and smpte in. The inputs can be used both for mic level and line level. Works both on Mac and PC laptops.
There is another version which has 4 inputs \ outputs.
