I don't understand the point in your question.
'worth' is a rather relative word...

If you need it and you want it, and you would want to get it - then get it.

What I mean is, if it's worth for YOU, then it's worth it.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

ok let me give you an example.

one guy bought it, didn't know what to do with it or how to use it with his music.
He thought it sux! And he hated himself for buying it(as strange and unreal as it sounds)

And there's another guy, who used it in every track he made and it was a big part of his creation process for an album.
He loves it!

The machine is the same...

Your question: "Is it good enough for music production" - what answer do you want to get?
You're saying you're simply asking - but that question is far from simple. And I don't even know what to answer man.

Maybe if you'd mention that you're trying to immitate the Christian Church choral boys - using that machine, I'd say no. But that's a drastic example.

btw,
I had a few experiences with the mc 303.

I can tell you it's a fun machine to play around at a Live situation - changing beat patterns as it plays and turning a few knobs. The sound is pretty warm and tender - I think this sound could be reproduced by the computer today.
You can create music with any hardware you buy - really.

But $300 is a little bit too expensive I think. $150 is more like it.

hi

i think $300 is too much for that machine.

i've had a mc505 and i love it and learn a lot from it.

the problem is those machines are sample players (with some very good samples) and youll probably get much more from your computer than from using one of those

the sequencer is somewhat flawed (if it works like the 505) and i think the 303 had some midi issue (google for it to find more info).

it doesnt sound analog or trys to do so, it's tb303 samples are mostly crap because it's no use sampling one (like sampling a guitar, brass or wind it will almost always sound crap) and you can get tr909/808 samples anywhere on the net...

i think you can get a kstation for that money (second hand) or a darkstar synth or maybe something else more tweakable and more analog sounding (isjnt what we all want)?

roll a joint or STFU :)

yeah, don't buy it, especially at that prize. If you're interested in making psytrance, there are more fun toys to buy than that. I have a mc 505 and I was planning on selling it for not much more than that price.

thanks guys.. ya i borrowed it for few days to try it out. like Trip said its fun to play around with.. but i know its fun for couple of days and there are only 448 tones and 12 drum kits.. which ill get over with.

ya midi doesnt work properly either.. few knobs do not send msgs.. i thought it was problem with the machine i got.. but it is manufactures fault..

I got less for my 505 off ebay ,
sold it one year ago for around 250 € I think. 300$ is ridiculous high for a crappy rompler that is pretty much useless in modern production. Sounds aren't up to date anymore.           www.dezma.be

Frankly it's beyond me why anyone would buy that groovebox for making trance. Software is so much more flexible and there are thousands of quality samples available on the net.           When rain dries, clouds form.

jivamukti, people buy it, because this way they can "touch" their music. It is subjective, but fun.
Besides it is not the instrument, but the artist that makes the instrument alive. You should try it once....

Of course it is more fun a real synth, real fx processor, real mixer console, but ... they are far more expensive.

And as for "making trance", believe me, the thing people record with groovebox ( that sends MIDI properly, not mc303 ) can be put on any VST, and the controls will remain genuinely "real", and isn't this what we want ? ( especially manually recorded knobs etc. )

cheers.
