Linux.... hm.. I'd say if you choose to run Linux you should probably be more interested in the development of Linux and software for it rather than the development of your music....
Not a fault of Linux per se, just reality at the moment...

Control (ctrl) button + click = right click.

Also, I can't remember what they called it, the Mac 'mega' or 'super' mouse, has a right button (wooo!)

I just came back from the Apple Center and they quoted me on MacPowerbookPro, 15" 2.2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 7200rpm 160GB HD = 2119 EUR.

They also had the older Macbookpro for 200 EUR less.

I think it's about 500 EUR more than same spec PC laptop, but configuration is proven to run stable, so think its worth it -now I just have to sell my body for money

If you are going down the Apple route, buy online, it's cheaper. Also, call the number on their website and tell them you are a student, if they ask for your student number, make up a random 5 digit number. They never check and you may get 15% or more off. Worth a try.

Last time I spoke to someone from Apple internet sales I told them I was a student they didn't even ask for anything, just gave me a big discount.

Random thought:
I think the reason they mostly teach Logic in college is because Apple gives schools free workstations, they know in the long run they'll make their money back hooking kids on Logic. I use both extensively, and Cubase, for me, has the edge.

Why the Macbookpro?

It's not worth the 1000 Euro extra....just take the small Macbook and be happy! (And save alot of money..)

Because I want 15" screen and top of the line specs. I agree there isnt that much difference, but the macbookpro has a video card, the normal macbook the processor also processses the video, so apparently the pro is faster because of that. It is a big price difference I agree, something still tempts me to get a Pc laptop, would be easier for me, am on pc now (albeit a glitching bitch)

Hmm, I will be a student again from September. Even with a Mac, I'll be using cubase, I am not Vulcan.           Cytopia.org

you're confused, a bit:
in the macbook the graphic card uses main memory, and it can use less memory, it's intel 965 graphic chipset, it is a separated device, it's called "shared memory", this also has a side effect that you ACTUALLY don't have your full memory amount, but
MEM - <graphic memory size>

in the macbook pro there's graphic nvidia card, it has its own dedicated memory, and it has a bit fatter graphics engine.

15" screen is nice indeed, although I still don't think a laptop with even a 17" display is more convenient than a desktop with 2x20" displays ;-)
and as you know in audio you can always use extra display area ( or extra display. )

The only nice thing about mbp is the ExpressCard, which is a PCI-E for laptop, much faster than PCMCIA, but there's no device on the market currently working with it. only "soon to be announced" ones, take this into the account.

I think the 1st device will be ready in about sept./oct. this year.

Still, a laptop is a better choice for live act, rather then long work in studio: the laptop has still smaller display area. So, maybe the people are right.

Ok, thanx. The guy at the apple center was trying to convince me the mbp is much faster then the macbook even if you have same processor speed, and this because of the graphix card.

The mbp comes with 2GB ram standard, the mb doesnt, plus with 15" screen and video card it might just be worth it. 13" is small (but nice for travel). So many choices, can drive one crazy.

Express card is good, think the new external UAD-1 card will have this.

What about Mac and spyware, viruses; I heard they dont have the same trouble PC's have on internet, if thats true, its another plus.

you will only notice the difference in performance due to a better gfx card when doing graphically intense work ie games.

2gb ram is great.

The situation about Macs and internet security is ridiculous, and patently untrue. Yes there are perhaps less viruses written for the mac - but don't let your guard down, because plenty are written for the Mac - its even easier now they have a common architecture with the PC.           .

I'm not sure if that is true. In PC it isnt since if there is no extra GFcard, grafic shares the memory from mainmemory. I made bad experiences with glithces etc. with shared GFx cards in PC notebooks...

Have you actually got a virus with a Mac ?
not in theory.

I mean, yes you should be security aware: not to open unknown attachments, not to enter suspicious sites, not to respond suspicious mails, but ...
have you seen a mac that got a virus ?

the effect is minimal, and on a well set up system nearly nothing.

I didn't say there isn't a difference, only that you won't notice the difference with 2d apps.

I used to have a 965 chipset. Performance was rocksolid with cubase.           .

why not?

Don't be ridiculous, macs are open to viruses, just like any other system.
