The more listening to what has become of trance, not sure it is any more and most sounds like techno, with a rolling bass-line, trance should contain algorithms, that slowly evolve over time, to take the brain into an alternated psychedelic state.
Originally some does like Astral Projection, Infected Mushroom, yet much of what hearing now sounds the same and doesn't seem to evolve; started listening to just segments of it and knowing the track.
So do you think trance should be progressive and evolving like a landscape, to be truly classed as trance?

What a food for thought! and i guess no basic answer..
It has so much to do with perception!
The first answer will lead to the next and so on until you dont know what the truth is....
Dont think it feel it!
certain music will trigger certain things for different persons...
its like one example is not good enough
we would have to go back to the core and then move forward, analyze everything... And still we maybe stand puzzled..
But yes Goatrance is all about evolving sounds
maybe psytrance is more about confusion, and techno about rhythm..

yeah! I think maybe we fool our self in believing that things of the past is the only true thing....
Its not that we reinvent the wheel all the time but look at it like we can focus on more detail, bring in new knowledge to creation and make more nice music... or just have a good time, have some fun and dance..
As long as we have a vision to do something good and learn from mistakes, both our own and others...
Someday i want to have a go at Goatrance! I made some tests and i think it can be a nice thing to do...
There will always be haters and lovers, some will say thats already been made and some will say thats some good stuff... keep at it... its a choice we make!
Im not saying we should copy, but get inspired! what turns out good is good for those who choose to see it as good...

To answer the basic question
Trance is to repeat until you get into a flow where your mind is free from thought, like there is only one synapse that is being used... its a secure place with a very good feeling... the feeling of being one...
this is achieved with rhythm. and rhythm is in everything... one sound has its vibration which then can be seen as a rhythm, something that swing...
try it on you guitar... pluck a sting and let it ring, feel and hear the vibration, and go with it, now try different strings and you feel and hear different vibrations, rhythms.. also called Hertz
yeah yeah

Goa is the only way to go xD
I try to capture the evolving synthetic sound-scapes of Goa in my tunes, and also try to capture the structure/rolling-basslines/sampled patterns of Psy-Trance in them as well...
I don't want to derail the thread but check out my tunes and see what you think:

I think Trance (at least my tunes) are about presenting a set of feelings for the listener to pick up and relate to.

I think these are 2 different questions, or statements - Producers have become less creative and more predictable (which is true to every genre in music btw, not just trance), and that trance is different in approach, with less filter lfos.
I think it's good that more elements got incorporated into trance, you can use them as well as evolving sounds and create a new sound! this is what being a good musician is all about - getting your own unique sound.
You expect music (and musicians) two opposite things - to stay the same as you remember and like, and to change so they don't bore you. think about it! |

Techno is very "fake" and mechanical sounding--not that this is a bad thing, but it is part of the aesthetic. There is no effort to make it sound "natural", the jarring, rough transitions and volume cuts/raises are part of how techno sounds.
Techno is all about using the most unique sounds you can--the most unique-sounding kick drum, hi hat, bassline, etc... (I wish psytrance would have more variety in its instrumentation, 4 out of 5 psytrance tracks have almost the same kick drum and bassline)
Techno doesn't build up or down, it builds sideways--the energy level stay mostly constant even though the track changes. This is because, with techno, the tracks are colors that the DJ uses to create a painting--techno tracks are often basically just a single loop with minimal change.
If you want to talk about "trance" you have to clarify goa, psy or club/rave trance, because they are all so different that you can't really call them one genre (that they are all called "trance" is kind of a coincidence) |
