Don't know the answer to that one. But if I had to guess, I'd say that since the crack is emulating the dongle, it can conflict with the real one. But not necessarily.

One thing I know is that I've been sent project files from Cubase 5 (windows pc) and that Cubase 8 converted the files and opened with 0 problems.

i dont know. probably nobody does. if it works with somebody else it does not mean it will work with your system. warez for such a big and complicated software is great if you cannot afford the legal one but it has its own price in time consuming issues.

i went the same route as you did. had many issues with C5 air on win7 pro.

in C8 i had a problem with windows not closing. After contacting Steinberg they asked me for a log file, from that file they could see the issue and instructed me to download/install a file and all was fine again.

i am not sure if they can see your air version in logs, and if they care about that, but in my opinion it makes no sense to pay for legit C8 and still take the risk to have problems that come with the warez. and since C8 opens C5 files there is no reason also.           http://soundcloud.com/vipal

I've noticed that Steinberg allows you to download, install and run previous versions of Cubase. For example, you can download Cubase 7.5 from their website and use the same dongle to open it. I know because I wanted to see just how stable it was compared to Cubase 8 (specially prior to the last update, which solved all my issues with it).

Ok, so maybe you don't even need to use the crack at all for Cubase 5, just delete it, make a clean install of it and try it with your dongle. If you're afraid or reluctant to do it, for whatever reasons, you can always try it first on some Virtual Machine - that's fairly easy to setup, there's free solutions available and everything, so it's a no brainer for such situations.

Oh, and I don't think they'd care if you've used a crack version 'cause it turns out you liked it so much that you ended up going legit.

Let's be a little honest here: there's a reason why Cubase 5 was available and now there's no more cracked versions. Cubase is still a big name in the industry. But seeing as they're probably losing many of the new producers to other software, like Ableton and Studio One, this may even change in the future.

There's a good example of that: when Apple bought Emagic and thus Logic along with it, the first versions had a dongle similar to that in Cubase. Needless to say there was no crack version. Just take a look at it now. No protection, they even let you download the additional content - all of it! Even those packs we used to pay real money for. All there, for free. Software of such scale, size and history doesn't need much publicity. But it needs to stay relevant and appeal to the new guys - to keep the hype. Otherwise, as it seems to be happening with Cubase and Pro Tools, it can dispense with that and just be the thing that Pros go for - hence its new name.

That's the part of it that's marketing. Been around long enough to know my ways on the internet. I've managed to read actual conversations between people working for Steinberg and known cracker groups with a very polite and even friendly tone to it. Not going into details here. In a way, it's as if a huge part of the warez software people get access to was not stolen, but just made to look that way, 'cause it's also a publicity and marketing scheme.

For example: if this Cubase protection works so well, why don't all the others just use it? If Bitwig and Studio One did it, they'd go bankrupt. This is not far fetched. This is how it rolls.

That being said, I think people should buy the stuff they use the most. There's some big companies (like Apple) that can live with people not paying for their DAW, it's actually very good for them. While you're learning, you'll stay on the mac side and they profit from it. If you mature to become a pro, then you'll buy it - that easy! On the other hand, there's very small companies that really need our support to survive and keep doing what they do.
