how does a phaser work?

A phaser uses an analog delay to generate a phase shifted version of the signal. The shift is modulated by an oscillator so the amount of shift changes over time. When the delayed signal is mixed back with the original signal, phase cancellations occur which is referred to in engineering as "comb filtering".

*is it possible to make one?

Yes, but they're so cheap (Danelectro phasers are only $40 brand new) to buy there's no cost incentive to build one. The analog delay chips used in phasers are getting scarce and expensive.

yea and does anyone know a link to where i could hear on phaser used on a bass??

Phaser on the bass can sound cool for builds, intros, breaks etc, but it might get a bit annoying if it was done for the whole track (just my opinion of course)...send the bass to an effect channel with low cut and phaser on it to avoid screwing up the subs, or bounce the bass line to audio and put on a different audio track with phaser and low cut (this works well on breaks if you bounce the kick and bass together!)

yes , agree with psyjinx , phaser , flange , reverb and fx on bassline si cool for a short intro or in a breakdown sequence but for the whole track its not so good , however i recently did something with a light reverb on the bassline the whole way through the track and it made a cool atmosphere , mettalic , spacy and kinda cool .. so watever works for u

you can try phaser in a new channel and layer it on top of the bass channel (like a send effect) with the low frequencys cutted. else you'll ruin dancing. you can also have a synth with the exact same notes as the bassline and phase it.

about reverb eskimo used it recently in a track and it sounds really fat, in a k-b- k-b- style bass. i'll try that too someday maybe           Pyrex :: Traveling without moving

some slight chorus can also make the bass stand out a little more...
