It is totally legal. I assure you that every.single.artist has used presets.
The trick is to not use them as a crutch, and to use them to learn. Finding a great preset and then tweaking it into your own patch is a great way to build your knowledge, or to reverse engineer a preset.
Do whatever you need to do to advance your knowledge and get sounds that you like - steal, sample, use presets, fuck it man!
Not like 'teh man' really cares what people do in psytrance land anyways - no one makes money doing this shit anyways
If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

well every guitar/drum/violin (any instrument) is a "preset" and usualy there is only 1 hehehe and thats good enough to make career out of
so why not to use presets? its all about what u do with it.
synthesis is cool too tho.. specialy for psy and ambient and not 'regular' music

Every player has their own style, its completely different thing when the instrument is played or sequenced. And with electric guitar for example tweaking the amp and fx is same as tweaking them in electronic music. Just to nitpick a little

I like to use presets for finding the right sounds then I get the ideas and I recreate this presets sounds from scratch. I always end up somewhere totally different than the preset Ive used. This works really well for me cus I can work fast using presets for a reference and I can l8r concentrate on a specific sound. |

well you can add effect to synth too i believe
and as far i remember there is that little thing in every studio called midi keyboard , nothing is telling you not to use it and write music in little square dots instead playing real time.
i didnt thought the hole explanation needed but i stay in my opinion that if you know to play or write really good then what u used is irrelevant

I love making init sounds, but use presets on occasion. Rarely I'll use a preset as-is, but sometimes you come across one that fits in perfectly, so might as well use it. I think of using presets like using samples, nothing is wrong with either one and there's no reason to invent the wheel twice.
If you're starting out, spend some time studying the presets you're using to see how they were synthesized. This should give you some ideas of your own to try out and makes sure you're actually learning some synthesis along the way.

Weird man! I feel the complete opposite you know? I find the preset browsing thing too disturbing.
Most of the time i know exactly what sound i want and where to start. I must admit i use my own presets and some others as a start for some sounds i know i like tho. |

Yes, browsing trough factory presets is very time consuming and I almost never get something useful out of it. So I have a presets bank with sounds that Ive picked out of different preset banks. I think that it is essential to pick and save the sounds you like, so you have something useful to start with. So I build something thats sounds almost good, then recreate those presets, tweak them into something else, put fx on them, experiment, then I like to save different stages of results that I like as ableton instruments racks for further use in my song.
This way really works with me cus I get stuck with blank synth quite easily. |

The biggest names in the industry of Psy as well as Trance use presets. They tweak them so it fits with the mix. It could be as simple as amp adsr, or just lowering the voices, the off swithes for the synthesizers internal effects.
Mainly it's always some amp adsr tweaking.
But try to tweak your sounds, first learn amp adsr. Filter tweaking. Then external fx tweaking. And then sound shaping as a hole. - just my thought on it
And on the subject that people might hear your presets. First of all I never heared of people going to these parties ever had a clue that Psy could be made by a single pc.(or mac)The main circuit are clueless when it comes to production and would never even try it. They are there for the experience, not as producers.
- Cheers

the only thing that matters is the output... noone cares what you use, until it's some well-known copyrighted stuff
