so which albums/comps were too ambient to you? i might enjoy them imo everything's a bit too beat orientated nowerdays. i do like beats but if one can't play a beatless set on a chill stage anymore then that sounds very sad and alarming indeed. it tells a lot about the state of mind the audience or festival attenders are in...

+1

there were all sort of albums & comp. released this year u jus have to find the one's suitable to ur needs

p.s. i miss really chilled out tunes like Nada           the problem with valuing art is, till u dont understand it, it's worthless but wen u do understand it, it's priceless!!

Is it just me or do other people think that the chilled side of psychedelic chill out music is getting too chilled ?
Especially this years releases there's a lot of home listening very ambient CD's released not my cup of tea and to be honest useless to me. when you're djing in a club or parties back room / chill area you need some interesting beats and something to grab your audience. something that seems sadly lacking with so many current releases.

Cheer up dude! the ruomours say a new killer is on his way to psybient stages...

once upon a time the chill-out (a term derived from a slang injunction to RELAX) stage was intended to be an area were people could gather in a mellow atmosphere, eat and drink, have conversations, space out and even get some sleep while other stages were dedicated to more body moving music. now people seem to be too hyped for even stopping for a moment to breathe, think and feel at a slower pace which is just as important for human beings as the energetic, faster rhythms and pulses are.
and i'm not sure if this a sign of the times or just something that has been cooked up by djs who would rather play at the main stage or other upbeat stages. i know myself a couple of djs who find it extremly difficult to stick to their job as chill-dj and start to wander off into more danceable realms.

I think everyone would agree that no one likes it when someone starts playing non chilled music in a chill out room.

reading what you said there it makes me wonder if peoples first introduction to chilled music defines what they expect my first adventures into chill out were going clubs like Oscillate (which was the Higher Intelligence Agencies club night in Birmingham) and Whirl-y-gig in London or seeing acts like Tribal Drift, Banco de gaia and Loop Guru playing festivals in the early 90's and the dancefloor would be full of people dancing like nutters to what is chill out music. I find all this poncing about sitting on cushions (and even worse people falling a sleep in chill out areas !!!!) pretentious arse.

I think you're onto to something Cosmonaughty. My first chillroom experience (in 1995) was in the office section of a warehouse (the pounding main room was the main body of the warehouse itself, with Sven Vath playing one of his 6hr epic sets). This little chillroom has artists playing all sorts of kooky psychedelic tripped out stuff, that kind of turned into a montage of sounds. I'll never forget it.

So I suppose I like to submerse myself into the chill space and be taken on a journey.

That particular chill space was one for sitting around, chatting, perhaps a little dancing, and just generally "being". And also being tripped out by sounds, and something laughing at teh silliness of it all. Hehe...

Really, I never looked back after that night.

aww, you english have sometimes lovely ways of expressing your most inner thoughts. they make me want to sit and sleep in a most pretentious manner on annoyingly big and obnoxiously fluffy cushions even more

And i highly recommend VA spacedivers:

For me, D'em D'aliens from grapes of wrath is the best "ambient" track ever.

About the main subject, i don't think the problem is that chillout music is getting too chill, for me the prob is that kind of music is getting extremely boring: always the same kind of sounds, leads, vibrations...I love ambient/downtempo but there's definitly not enough experiementations for my taste...Anyway, maybe that's the same problem for each kind of styles but i feel it specially in ambient music. After, we can discuss as we want about how a chillout space must be, but in fact this the DJ's job to feel what si the best for people at the moment...full chill?, heavy slow beats?...Just depends of the present vibe, but it's sure he needs a lot of various stuffs.

About "rules" (low level, relaxing ect..). A long time ago in London, i experimented a "chill-dancefloor"...Some people was just sitting and relax, but most of them was dancing slowly and trippy...It was a really nice experience, like on a psytrance dancefloor but....slowly.
I hope i'll find this again in my life, was so great. Too much customs can be dangerous sometimes...it limits the possibilities (who are infinite in fact)...Let's stay aware.           http://ayalien.deviantart.com/

Mmmm...I don't want to wait! Let's stay in touch about this stuff...The best way is to ask him directly.

trance on the chillout is always a bit sad for me.... it says "doesn't understand mellow and subtle... "

unfortunately its sometimes organized that way. i was sad to see the excellent AES Dana music on the chill tent at Ozora- when it is in fact- Sloa-- goa a little slowa...
perfect for daytime on main floor...
why put him on the chill?

keep the chillout chill...
i dont want banging or too loud when im trying to chat and relax...
getting a little weird and out-there thats ok... no need to be classic....

and for fucks sake whats up with this horrible white-peoples-music-with-indian-samples-totally-butchered-into-western-scales-and-4/4-rhythm?

take away the indian sample cd's!!!

Probably best just to file under "Each to their own" and move on. If no one was listening to it or buying it, it wouldn't last very long as a style. Truth is a lot of people out there _do_ like it, are buying it, and will probably continue to do so.
