Is chillout getting too chilled ?

hmm, I don't know. I find low bpm home listening stuff more psychedelic , but I understand many people might prefer driving beats in chill.

New or old school Psy-chill or Psy ambient is pretty good, but not as psychedelic or deep sounding as some minimal dark ambient or beatless stuff from old school ambient artists IMHO.

if you're djing a chillout space it should also depend on the mood of the audience.....most of the times i did so, it proved best to play sorts of groovy sounds that people can nod their heads and feet to - or even dance a bit. (let's say from 90-120 bpm) but there are also times when most of the audience is asleep or just before that and then you can send them even deeper into space with more "real ambient" stuff that has little or no beats at all.
satisfying homelistening imho depends mostly on the personal taste...
but i miss the big choice of real groovy chill as well......sometimes you have to search a lot, because even low-bpm-music can be very stressy nowadays...anyway there's still enough cool stuff out there

One reason for more uptempo music in the chill area might also be the quality/direction of the music on the mainfloor.

For example at this years Ozora there has been so much dark and very fast music in the night that many people had only two choices in the night, go to bed or to the chill out.

I think many of these people came into the chill area and wanted to hear some uplifting music. On Saturday night the chill out tent was more an alternative stage for different dance music.

One thing I do like when playing on a chill stage is seeing someone - even just one person - really getting into some free-form dancing to slow beats or beatless music. It can be the most sublime thing - both for the dancer and the dj.

Of course, there's still times when some easily danceable beats are just what the chill needs. I agree with Tech Monkey that the chill is a place where you should be able to sit and have a chat.

Man, I wanna be sitting on a chill floor now. But alas, Rainbow Serpent Festival is still 5 months away... (tho i will get to something before then.)

that's the problem right there.
once upon a time the chill-out (a term derived from a slang injunction to RELAX) stage was intended to be an area were people could gather in a mellow atmosphere, eat and drink, have conversations, space out and even get some sleep while other stages were dedicated to more body moving music. now people seem to be too hyped for even stopping for a moment to breathe, think and feel at a slower pace which is just as important for human beings as the energetic, faster rhythms and pulses are.
and i'm not sure if this a sign of the times or just something that has been cooked up by djs who would rather play at the main stage or other upbeat stages. i know myself a couple of djs who find it extremly difficult to stick to their job as chill-dj and start to wander off into more danceable realms.
i do not have anything against midtempo music. in fact i like it very much. i just want to keep the chill-out as a safehaven in this world of fastforwarding and on top of that have a splendid midtempo stage too

You'll never satisfy everyone

There were so many negative opinions on the condition of chill music and chill stages@many parties here for the past 2-3 years (no more indian samples, same artists, book alternative artists etc etc) which shows that a lot of people want something different than a typical (what's typical you can say hehe) chill music ...

I think it's a matter of personal taste (as always hehe) - I, personally, find a lot of beatless ambient music boring and do not enjoy it when sitting/chatting/relaxing in chill room

Plus the whole scene is changing over the years I think

Overall - balance is the most important thing

PS. You should see PACKED chill tent@Ozora on the first night where local djs where playing hypnotic housey (?) stuff           http://www.chillumafia.com

i wasn't actually talking about a chill-out stage with only beatless ambient music. there are lots of moods and grooves that can be included in one night. my actual point was to remind people (myself included) that the chill-out stage should be about relaxing and not dancing. hell, if somebody wants to do a jig it's ok mosquito but turning the area into a dancefloor with playing continuous upbeat music isn't imo the right thing to do. yes, times are changing but some things are too good and too necessary (even if the crowd doesn't understand it at the moment) to be changed ...and my solution was a chill area PLUS a alternative and/or midtempo dancefloor.
that's all. and it all comes down to tastes. ofcourse.

Not at all. Some are very chilled indeed but then there has always been ultra chilled chillout music. Listen to Ambient Odyssey from 1999 some ultra relaxed yet still really cool chill music.

There are some more upbeat chill for instance try

Kliment - The Perpetual Ritual (Electrik Dream Records)
Various - Vampire Sunrise (Celestial Dragon Records)
Solar Fields - Movements (Ultimae)

from this year that I have played (and have gone down well) in chill rooms.

Downloaded Kliment album, and I am loving it! Thank you           www.paranoidzen.com

Gotcha. That's why I try, when I have more than an hour lol, to incorporate dub, dubstep, psybient, sloow trance and glitch into my sets. Being a chill whore I can't stand banging music on chill stage. Although I always loved people moving their bodies more than those who were sleeping           http://www.chillumafia.com

I feel it out...If I was outside minding my volume or everyone was tripping hard, I'd be keeping it super mellow and atmospheric. But if I'm playing the chill room at a ravey rave for a bunch of hyped up kids, I'll still keep the tempo low (110bpm maximum) but will be playing hard hitting, livelier stuff.....which is really my favorite, despite my love for other styles.           http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector

i'd prefer them in different sets: the whole chill would be a well prepared journey with it's ups and downs and djs would play min 2h sets. early morning for very chilled tunes (yes! beatless ambient too) and in the daytime more "hefty" sets. *continues his festival chill-area organizer daydreams off-line*

I would actually like to play some beatless ambient stuff sometime, but unless the bass lines are fairly beefy, it seems like the sound from the trance stage is always bleeding over the more quiet ambient passages. It would be great to play a party where the chill stage is far enough away to not be bothered by other stages!

Usually crickets are much louder than beatless ambient
