Is it just me or do other people think that the chilled side of psychedelic chill out music is getting too chilled ?
Especially this years releases there's a lot of home listening very ambient CD's released not my cup of tea and to be honest useless to me. when you're djing in a club or parties back room / chill area you need some interesting beats and something to grab your audience. something that seems sadly lacking with so many current releases. |

Not at all. Some are very chilled indeed but then there has always been ultra chilled chillout music. Listen to Ambient Odyssey from 1999 some ultra relaxed yet still really cool chill music.
There are some more upbeat chill for instance try
Kliment - The Perpetual Ritual (Electrik Dream Records)
Various - Vampire Sunrise (Celestial Dragon Records)
Solar Fields - Movements (Ultimae)
from this year that I have played (and have gone down well) in chill rooms.
  Wait.....What? |

know what you mean Cosmonaughty, I am forever looking for stuff that isn't for home listening. I like ultra chilled stuff but if you want to keep an audience interested as you say then beats are important. 3rd Ear Audio has some nice tracks if you haven't already heard it. And there's some nice tracks on Cosmosophy - Organic Space Age. |

Terra Nine - Streamofconsciousness is a healthy mix of breaks, downtempo and even some DnB mixed with psychedelic ambient.

so which albums/comps were too ambient to you? i might enjoy them imo everything's a bit too beat orientated nowerdays. i do like beats but if one can't play a beatless set on a chill stage anymore then that sounds very sad and alarming indeed. it tells a lot about the state of mind the audience or festival attenders are in...

Sometimes a hour or two of beatless music is just what you need at a festival. Sit down with a chai and chat or just soak it all up.

NOT AT ALL
Just open your eyes and look "outside the bun" lol :
Vlastur
Irukanji
Ambientium
Bird Of Prey
shit
I felt a little akward while I was spinning@Ozora during 1/2 of my set when I was bombarding a chill tent with hard (imho) mixture of dubstep, glitch, psychedelia, asian breaks, dub, indian electronica and slooow danceable stuff.
There's sooo much great shit which MOVES the chill floor
You just have to look extra hard for it
Peace

that's the problem right there.
once upon a time the chill-out (a term derived from a slang injunction to RELAX) stage was intended to be an area were people could gather in a mellow atmosphere, eat and drink, have conversations, space out and even get some sleep while other stages were dedicated to more body moving music. now people seem to be too hyped for even stopping for a moment to breathe, think and feel at a slower pace which is just as important for human beings as the energetic, faster rhythms and pulses are.
and i'm not sure if this a sign of the times or just something that has been cooked up by djs who would rather play at the main stage or other upbeat stages. i know myself a couple of djs who find it extremly difficult to stick to their job as chill-dj and start to wander off into more danceable realms.
i do not have anything against midtempo music. in fact i like it very much. i just want to keep the chill-out as a safehaven in this world of fastforwarding and on top of that have a splendid midtempo stage too
p.s. thanks for your pm cosmonaughty. some of the releases are already familiar to me and i enjoy them very much! "no one ever sweats on a plug-in" -moby |

To me (as a listener) "chillout" generally means "relaxing background ambiance" and that I can expect to do the following:
1) Be able to hold a conversation at normal levels and not have to yell over the music.
2) That whether the music be beatless or beat oriented, I can be comfortable just sitting and relaxing immersed in the experience.
I like and collect the danceable downtempo a lot as well, but my personal preference is that something billed as "chillout" be more about creating an atmosphere conducive to relaxation than focusing on being danceable.
Then again, I'm more a home listener/collector and rarely go to events, so my opinion may not really matter anyhow.
