I have recorded quite a nice bass from a Doepfer once, but not with mike, just with analog cable (line)

I havent done this yet, but I am planning to record some stringwork soon, but I would not use a mic. I think there will be too much noise in that. I am thinking of just plugging the Bass or Guitar into my soundcard, and record it that way...           www.xun.dk / myspace.com/xundk

IMO it's best just to direct plug unless you have a bunch of high end equipment. You can get good results with direct plug and its quite convenient. I use the amplitube 2 (much better than amp 1) to record my guitar and it sounds excellent. I never thought a piece of software would sound close to a good amp. And don't forget to double track I don't know about bass but I'd imagine the same holds true. Take two or more recordings using different tones. By actually doing separate recordings there are variations in timing that add to the character.

in a lot of our tracks we recorded the bass to audio for accurate editing.

I play bass guitar, and ive used it a couple of times in some tracks
I like to play funk/slap bass style, so just a short lick in the break with some delay
For my chillout project i experimented a bit with my fretless bass, but i liked more the analog synth sound

Its nice to do, but you should practice your timing because it can be a pain in the ass to cut a guitar part to quantize it

We are talking electric bass right? Not synth?

I've recorded some electric bass but not for psy. I've just used a DI box/the DI input on my preamp and thats perfectly ok with bass unlike electric guitars wich you should record with a mic infront of the amp.

Use DI-box. Direct insetion to line in doesn't sound that good. We've used to record bass guitar via DI-Box with our rock band and it sounds far better than inserting it straight to mixer or soundcard.

If you really wanna record it with microphone, use condensator microphones. Dynamics won't do you any good.

Actually best way of recording bass guitar is using both, DI and microphone. Then comparing the sound and using only other one or mixing those 2 together. Just be careful with phasing if u use both

There's plenty of bass in downtempo styles..I've done it.
For psytrance or progressive stuff, I haven't ever used recorded bass or been able to pick it out in a track.
