Compression is a dynamic process, the compressor behaves differently depending on how the level progresses.
Convolution is essentially a static process.
The only devices i know that do this are the Liquid range from Focusrite.
They made ir's of all combinations of settings for different input levels etc, etc, and blend them in a dynamic fashion along with some real time processing.
Normal convolution is not able to imitate the dynamics of a compressor...
