I don't own an Ipad, but since the Ipad 2 has been released, the original has dropped in price by $100. Plus, you can get a refurbished model from the Apple website for an additional $50 off - or if someone is looking to upgrade, ebay or a private sale might get it even lower.
To be honest, all these people hopping on the Apple bandwagon claiming that its a life-changing experience - I just don't buy it!
I've been into computers my entire life, I've had my own IT company for the past 6 years and I'd consider myself in the elite category of computer users. But - the paradoxical thing is; as time has gone on, I've reduced the amount of applications on my PC. I used to be into all the latest software. I taught myself programming languages, Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, Indesign, Cubase, Logic, Reason.. I mean the list is endless.. I played loads of games too, now, I haven't played a video game of any kind in over 5 years.
My point is, now I'm older, the only things I use are an Internet Browser and my Sequencer!
Occasionally I'll edit a photo or play some music in Winamp.. but I just don't feel the need to try everything.
I have better things to do than look for apps that might shave a few seconds off making dinner or some other menial task. I suspect people spend more time looking for apps than they do saving time with them!
Aaaanyway.. I got a bit sidetracked there.
I just wondered about having an extra control interface. I was looking at buying a Cubase Keyboard. I already know my shortcuts inside out, but the thought occurred to have a control next to the keyboard - an Ipad for example, that would allow me to make macro buttons or label and define my own shortcuts. All laid out visually, how I want it to look.
Is this even possible? If not - why not! The only things I can think of, that seem simple enough, don't exist!
I just wondered if anyone was successfully using a tablet device in their studio, or even live - and really getting something out of it?

i think there is an app for ipad that works like the jazz mutant lemur, i dont know how similar they both are, but if it works like the lemur you should buy the ipad right now! hahah

I am considering buying an original Ipad just to control Spectrasonics Omnisphere and the like HOWEVER i am finding it really difficult to part with the money for a toy which i perhaps cant justify at the minute.

SQL uses it for live sets. As a controller it is quite expansive i'd say but it looks quite impressive. A good way to show the public what you actually do and to get them to move their arms in the air like they just don't care!

I don't remember who exactly, but some folks used it in their live performance...Doing some scratching during the set,and whatnot.
From all the things I lost, that sandwitch cost me most :)
Right across the board, it has glowing reviews. And interestingly, one review pointed out - the hardware equivalent would cost twice as much as an actual iPad and the cost of this app (A bargain @ $9.99)
Pretty good YouTube video of it in action here
(Although, does anyone else find this guys accent annoys the piss out of you?)
Most importantly it supports multi-touch (as it should) and automation recording.
I think we can all agree, one major benefit of multi-touch control is the ability to move as many faders and buttons as you have fingers, obviously this is FAR superior to the click-drag of a mouse. Something that the digital world has never had the edge over an analogue desk when riding the several faders.

yeah, use iphone with touchOSC (render lemur obsolete) every live and grab the ipad from work whenver i can get my hands on it. going to buy one soon, but debating over a used and cheap ipad 1 (which is all you need for touchosc) or ipad 2 if I can find the justification (under depabe)
it rocks, and if you think of all the midi control surfaces out there, to have something fully configurable (you can make your own templates) plus flip through pages of controllers, its a pretty simple cost justification
Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

It would totally be worth it just for the controller aspect alone but after a couple days with the iPad 2 I am really, really happy with it for a variety of reasons.
Touchable, TouchOSC, garage band, ims20, omnisphere are really sweet music apps...had so much fun having someone play the keyboard while someone else mucked with fx on the iPad.
It was also really cool to see my girlfriends kids play around with garage band, see their eyes light up when they record something silly into the sampler and play around

My setup is going to be my APC40 and two iPads...one with touchAble and the other with Omni TR and Touchosc...
Working with the iPad for music has seriously changed my interaction with music and everything in general has been much more fun...especially handing it over to someone and watching them have fun playing with it.
For instance last night I handed it over to my partner who played omnisphere through touchables keypad while she also picked out her own patches...as I was adding drum loops, programming the bass anc doing other stuff...we got an astonishing amount of work done very quickly and had a blast doing it.
