I am weighing ipad against akai apc40, to choose only one of them.

On paper, iPad offers options and apps gallore, but does Touchable or Griid turn out to work well in djing kind of music making? Or more in an "home and office" setting as a tool which simplifies, makes mouse redundant?

Does Touchable prove sufficient for serious djing action, or should it be complemented by some additional midi controller?

i dont know bout ipad never had one but i love my apc 40... for production and dj set situation are uber...

in the production it was possible to remove the keyboard... i need the keyboard very few times coz u can get custom script to use some butoms from apc 40 as shortcut for ableton live...

in a dj/live situaiton with the apc 40 i dont need neither the mouse nor the keyboard.

but i know ipads can be uber aswell....

I guess you can use ipads wireless over Bluetooth, or something (I dont know/cant afford one).

Id love something like that, I guess the APC series and Launchpad do the same thing (APC has fades, Launchpad has dedicated master scene-launch buttons, I dont launch anything from the master myself and Turnado + 8 fades = <3)

I play my live with just my Korg microKONTROL and dont need to touch the mouse or QWERTY except to hot-swap or tweak the timing of the ML-185 sequencer. Program Change M4L devices + 16 microK pads = 8 instruments' preset toggles http://www.mossgrabers.de/Software/M4L/M4L.html The Korg does 'just enough' to play a decent live, its got enough controls and scenes to control the bare essentials of everything, to be able to tweak, trigger, mute, toggle and navigate 'just enough'. A button grid dedicated to clip triggering, and/or a separate controller for Turnado (so no matter what scene on teh Korg is active, I can still trigger fx, which means i could tweak a synth or sequencer while triggering) would make life live a lot faster, but Im surprised and pleased that it will do the job.

M4L has quite a few devices for iPad integration. Theres tons of neat apps for Apple touch devices. ReBirth, for example.

I drool.

Will Sanquil if I remember right plays with an iPad, maybe he'll enlighten us           .

www.faderfox.de/mark/

Another option is Faderfox, they have dedicated dj controllers for most every dj program, Live included, as well as others for Ableton for other purposes

if I recall the Live dj contol is around 300 euro, and the thing is like the size of a Bible, tiny. Looks pretty sturdy too, most major company controls are pretty much 30% PCB/70% empty plastic box. I know from experience how flimsy the Korg faders are compared to a Pioneer DJM (very, be gentle or SNAP). If you're used to hardware mixers like i was, some adjustments to your techniques is a good idea.           .

i made the choice of buying Novation ZeRO SL MkII (found 2nd hand for half price in mint condition), automap is working well in live and cubase too.

ipads gonna take a cpl of years to get to the top of its game , development wise. None of the current apps availble beat the novation automap.

I use the Akai APC40 and two ipads in my live/dj setup.

One ipad running Touchable, one ipad running Omni TR, APC running a modified Isotonik 8 template.

It is gloriously awesome.

I would NEVER choose to dj/mix with the ipad alone. for quick bass swaps and whatnot nothing beats faders and knobs. However, touch screens are amazing for certain things

I love touchables drum pads/keyboard. I love its x/y dots, being able to see my clip names, navigate through my set super quickly, adjust tempo without looking at my computer screen, control a shitload of device parameters *WITH THEIR NAMES*, snap mode, etc.

It works perfectly with my ad hoc network that is incredibly easy to set up.

Ipads are the fucking shit for music.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I found out just how the shit they are when i tried to find music programs for my old Win Mob 2003 Dell PDA. Theres one app for the PDA that even remotely has use, Theresa which is a midi controller. Single touch stylus screen doesnt make for ease of use in a live setting. Theres some pretty cool sorta-DAWish apps like Griff and Aurora. Its handy to have the ability to brainstorm ideas, wherever, in your pocket, but thats about all they're good for.

I guess, if Im not mistaken or saw it in a dream TouchOSC can be run from a touchscreen monitor, or if not I know at least a couple that do, www.froggyfrog.com/gcontrol/ such as that one.

Here's amazon's listing of touchscreens http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&index=blended&field-keywords=touch%20screen%20monitor&tag=smtfx1-20 Pretty close to the same price as an Akai or Faderfox, some for around 150 USD though, so thats another possibility.           .

@vermee
apc has many buttons, which is an advantage, but how about paging?
when you choose to use the functionality such as undo, rename, create track, AND the Matrix, you probably need to switch between pages. WHat's your approach?

@mudpeople
I use padKontrol, adapted to do most of faderfox plus much more, and I find its solo-rec-arm prev/next track etc. indispensible, but in APC its all times 8 (and more), which on paper makes the workflow more multithreaded, more natural to put together already existing elements.

@T O T A L, I just like the look of the Faderfox controls, they look like they could fall off a stand and not only be OK but like, put a dent in the stage Something like that would be a great secondary controller alongside the microKONTROL. The Korg does everything it can, but having some kind of master controller for fx and triggers and whatnot that is always accessible, with the Korg free to tweak sequencers and instruments and such (in a live) which is really what its meant for.

Ive broken off almost all the fader knobs working them too hard, they're only seated in like 1.5mm deep plastic I started out mixing with a DJM with the heavy duty metal everything. Id love a controller that i could abuse like that and the Faderfox is the only dedicated-Ableton controller that looks that sturdy. But thats just my problem

Superglue = duct tape for electronics

TouchOSC is just one of more OSC/MIDI apps than I feel comfortable claiming I understand OSC can do some pretty awesome things; an acoustic, wood xylophone as a controller via Kinect; human and apparently hamster based sequencers; whatever Iannix does; FaceOSC (your face = controller) and on and on...           .
