I like long intros - when they are really good - not that often today tbh, more in the days of past.
Can be a minute 30 secs - if it is that worth for dreamy mind deepning samadhi transforming all molecules ready to jump up to the sky for freakyness upsyde down the blasting storm.
I think there is no formula on it and if it is should be broken more than a few times - regarding intro atleast.
I think it completely depends on your film you're creating at the moment.

I did in the past but I'm in rehab for that now... just kidding, all you need is a Pad, voice sample and a whoosh-BAM! intro
Rarely do you mix in with the intro right, it just never gets played so I dont waist time on the intro anymore. Thats just me.

No you don't hear them on party's ,only on the start of a set, but there are many people who listen at home or in the car to your music so then they hear the intro's of your tracks , so intro's need some attention too

as a dj i can say that there it's not realy needed to do a long intro because most of the dj's choose one intro to play (the first track in the set). but as an artist i know that these decisions are more matter of mood |
