First of all I don't always use headphones for mixing/mastering but...when its night i do...i dont want to wake my mom. i live a big house and no people near by...but like i said don wanna wake er.
If i can't wait till morning to complete the master on the klien and hummels, i just do it my own way regardless of what the critics say about how terrible headphones are...im mean sure you'll go deaph...but its still almost as bad with speakers at a loud volume sound pressure [depending on the room/speaker combo.]
What i do to compensate the biggest problem with headphones is Bass judgement and of course the POOR POOR stereo field they yeild.
However, I use a simple trick that produces almost ''near-perfect'' [not distortion free] but close...masters on headphones sometimes [like at night when i cant make noise]
First of all you have to be able to produce good mixes and masters already for a few years, know your headphones etc...[for me i know my speakers and my phones]
I use Waves PAZ analyser of course to see the frequency, otherwise i would be way off even a ballpark master...even without stereo feild and compression adjustments.
K, what i do is i have a song ''insert very well mastered music title here'' playing in the background that suits the style of song, and i essentially copy the stero field imaging with izotope ozone 3 and others to my track...next morning i pop in the track on the klien and hummmels and still sounds great....except for the occasional distortion...sometimes no distortion depending on how well its mixed.
Thats just my opinion, and it works for me [at night] but in the day i usually always use my speakers for mixing/mastering.
Thx for reading,
-Jon.

honestly, I dont really get what you mean with you got a well mastered track playing in the background.
do you really have your track and another one playing at the same time over your headphones while you master it?!?
overall, I'm not a big fan of mixing/mastering over hp. its good as a kind of addition to good monitors, I always check my stuff on my hp and correct little things so the track sounds good on both if needed, but headphones are surely not a propper way to do a whole mix/master.
the problem with stereo-imaging on hp is that you dont have a natural stereofield there. without headphones you always get something from the left monitor in the right ear and the other way, just with a bit of delay compared to the other speaker. with headphones you really just get left side information in the left ear and right info in the right ear, and this results in a non-natural stereo-image that you wont get anywhere except with headphones. logics binaural post processing plugin tries to simulate that on headphones with mixing a bit from the left side in the right and the other way around and a little time delay on that. it helps a bit to get a better idea of the stereo image, but its not that great also.

I wouldnt get anything from 2 songs playing at the same time that are not totally in sync stereo-wise!
not to mention mixing or mastering one of them...congrats if you really get to manage that!
btw, that hdphx plugin does the same as logics binaural plug what I described above.

WTF you got monitors for 8000€ each and you are worrying about doing your stuff on headphones??!?!
you defenately got too much money dude!
btw, leaving that plug on while bouncing will sound horrible on anything else than headphones.

LOL not a chance HAHAHAHA. btw Canada doesn't usually do grants anymore, its mostly loans now. but...i got it cuz i qualified for disabiltiy, because i have adhd etc...
im still laughing HARD that they actually gave me the money hahaha. The only legit thing im gonna do, is pay itunes a big chunk of money to promote my music. Life is good. |
