after lots of fun at http://www.deadact.com/, some good reads from other people describing their live setup and - finally - after my own very first gig, I figured I could share my experience I gathered so far also outside looptalk (the official FL Forum). Especially since most of you guys seem to rely on abelton live... well, here's another approach, open for discussion!
Clicking on http://non.sense.ch/index.php?id=301 will get you:
- insight to a `FL Studio only` live setup; continuous and stable sound from one single laptop running two instances of FL
- some ideas which can be adopted to any live setup
- a ~70 min. recording (high quality VBR mp3 or stream it from last.fm) using this setup. Granted only the last two songs (bouble-beat valve and M0wl) are trancy/goaish, while the former are way more drum'n'bassy something (not the badass one) ... well, I don't give a crap what you call it... hope you enjoy it a bit..
BEWARE: though it's totally hip nowadays, there's no tubydoo/video but lot's of text to read. Regard it as `child/dummy protection`, bwahahaha
tweak on!

I don't think I could do this..too much detail and tweaking I can only do on the spot in Live. Interesting though..
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

I don't think it's a good idea to use two laptop's for a one-man-show. Sure, it isn't bad either, but:
1) I would never buy a second lappy only to complement my liveset, especially since one alone can handle all my needs perfectly - in terms of computing-power. Borrowing one isn't really an option either, for you can't really check it's reliability and use it for practice, etc.. (also the management of all the software, samples and songs/projects could be tricky, illegal or at least boring)
2) Two lappys means also two keyboards and two mouses... and that somehow ask's for trouble (confusing the mouse, etc... again as a one-man-show, if you have a buddy, that could be sweet as hell indeed!)
But ok, this shouldn't be that bad either, since you at least have also a second display and this is very important respectively the reason why I attached a second display to my lappy, so Deck A and B are nicely separated and always visible.

i think if FL improved its live mode and allowed you to monitor ahead it would be worthwhile. |

So what exactly are you missing in FL's livemode, resp. what should be improved?
As for the monitoring: you can do that, aslong as you have enough (headphone-)out's on your audiointerface, though at the cost of somehow redundant routing. But I agree, things could be a lot easier here. (I'm dreaming of a FL with two decks.. like a hybrid of FL and Deckadance/Traktor.. that'd be titts!) |
