Granular synthesis is a sound synthesis technique which splits soundfiles into tiny little soundclips (grains). You can then manipulate these grains to achieve some effects like time scaling/pitch scaling and many other weird noises. For time stretching for example the grains are copied and reassembled in order to make the sound longer. It's a very simple method.

Parameters usually include: length of the grains (ms), frequency (how often a grain is taken from the original soundfile), crossfade value (how much neighbouring grains overlap), pitch of the grains, attack and release of the grains. Interesting parameters are random values for pitch, length, attack, release, frequency and panning of the grains. This creates very complex soundpatterns/clusters.
To get a fluent new sound made out of grains, the grains have to be short enough so that you can't distinguish the different grains (usually below 20ms). Crossfade values let you make smoother/harsher sounds.
As you can imagine, many more manipulations are possible.

As it's a very simple method all of the manipulations can be made realtime. Realtime timestretching is often done this way. You can hear that effect in some psy-tunes.

If you want to get more detailed info, check Curtis Roads literature. You'll also find tons of information on the net.
Try the granular synthesis module in the latest Fruity Loops version, as well as Granulab.

Make some good sounds!

Granulizers are probably my favorite thing to run a voice sample through. Along with the Sesto Sento song, alot of posfords vocals sounds like they are gran. like the song MAGIK. The best way to get used to it is load a voice clip of some kind (midi, wav, whatever) set everything to its normal play then start messin with it. Ive created some phat ass effects using that thing. its also hard for me to call it a synthesizer even though it is.
