and thas when u would add compression to bring the levels up louder? without distortion or clipping?, the purpose is to maintain that purness you where when the volume is turned down, but the same when it rises, u get me?

You are asking questions that cannot be answered on a forum mate. There are subjective margins of mixing things to taste, once you go past the objective idea of what is a balanced mix.
You can only answer that question to your self, by practising more, from sound design, to long mixdown sessions and playback on different speakers, to analytical listening of things that sound good, in order to get your mixes sorted as well.
Just keep doing it the solutions will present them selves with time.
Its part of enjoying learning and making good mixes.
Peace out.

go for kick @ -10 DB and all will be ok =)
if you clip then concider take some volume down
if its not reaching -3db then concider raise the gain little bit (both can be done on the master volume)
for subs before mastering i supose dont go over -30db or so (by wavlab diagram)

^^and use comon sense for your starting point. And don't listen to people that use a kick that peaks at 0dBFS. Mixing to a 0dBFS kick is not common sense.

Like freeflow already mentioned, that -10db +4db setting on your monitors is for switching between balanced or unbalanced cables & source.
Perhaps, read your monitor manual for more info on that.
If your signal source has balanced outputs (as most soundcards do), and you are using balanced cables, set your monitors for +4db, you will have better signal to noise ratio.
Do not confuse this -10db/+4db signal setting with db volume levels of your sounds.

Maybe looking at mastered tracks in a spectrum analyzer could help? Just compare that to yours with some very light limiting on the master.
