well Maya, 3D Studio MAX, Softimage and such are programs for 3D graphics. you can make 3d animations with it and render it to any size you want (PAL, half PAL, NTSC, etc..).
programs like Premiere, After Effects, Combusion are for video post editing. Premiere is great for final stages when you have your entire video clips ready and you just edit (cut, move, etc) them together while After Effects is more for complex editing using lots of layers, sophisticated compositing with alpha channels, some special effects and more...
Combusion is a great new editing tool from Discreet (makers of 3dsmax) that combine both premiere and After Effects and also make it possible to work with 3d scenes.
for good performance in 3D your computer must have a fast powerful CPU (for rendering), lots of RAM - at least 256mb and a fast powerful 3d accelerator card (for boosting up your workflow).
for editing you must have a huge and powerful HD. something like a 20-40GB SCSI hd will do the work. after all - each frame in PAL size takes about 1MB and you'll work on 25fps (frame per sec) of course so you can do the calculation yourself.. :)
anyhow, with all the respect - producing and making a video clip using 3d apps and post production apps is a serious thing and not something you can just install and create. just the same way that not anyone who install audio apps can be called a musician... :)
i'm working as an animator since 95' (the covers is a fun thingy) and i've done lots of animations and some video clips so if you need help don't hasitate to ask. :) maybe we could also work on it together if it's a serious project and there's a normal budget to it. and in this case I'll be glad cause making a video clip for trance is a lot of fun! :)

its day and night compared to my other job :)
BUT i want to study it !
regarding a CPU > my system has >
450MHZ (mac wise) will change soon to DUAL 500mhz =2000mhz >pc ,
80GIG disks
dual matrox (promax)card
256 ram (512 around the curner)
PRO-TOOLS -to add some backround music : )
AND YOURS : ) ? ? ?
about the software > i'm willing to buy to best software to do the job !!!.

i prefer to support a local PSY dude (and pay some)
rather then support a ch' 2 commercial video company (even if they have
SG ,WAIT but i have one also ;) i just dont know how to switch da damn toster ;)
