i think you can make good bass patches with any subtractive synth supporting at least 1 osc (try saw), a low pass filter, a filter envelope (for the bass attack) and an amplitude envelope.

Your right there to a degree, its all about well shaped EQ with my bass..
Im a Logic user and always use either ES1, ES2 or ESX24.. all killer
Otherwise... Trilogy, Vanguard, Albino3, Blue, Predator, Neuxs... just some of many great 3rd-party plugs
