While there are elements of discussion on this topic in previous threads, i thought it would be interesting to know people's views on the topic.

Are you influenced by specific acts or individuals when you are creating music? If so, who?

I do not want to cause any angst among members, just want to get a feeling for opinions. Like if you have 100% original ideas for tracks or you are influenced by what others produce.

I dont think its possible to have 100% original ideas.... I mean youre exposed to so many diffrent things when u are awake and the brain just filters out the things u couldnt possible need! And restores the things "he" "thinks" is needed! And there u have your inspiration of the day! And when u put your ass infront of the comp and start composing u can either experiment or actually dig into your days influences.....

well, my influences derive from many streams of music - starting from blues, rock, hip hop, rnb, metal, 80's, industrial and classical music. in trance, i guess you could say Infected influenced me the most, but recently, i had some more influences, mainly a Guy and a physical term (you know who you are, guys)

Floyd/Hendrix/Doors/Jefferson Airplane
portishead/ozric/radiohead
Aphex/Hallucinogen/koxbox

everyone has his own taste (these are my favorite musicians of all times), and no one can't be influenced by what he hears. Posford for instance is clearly influenced by Ozric Tentacles, a few tracks you can hear Hendrix influences too.

Did he copy anything? no, he did his own thing in his own way, but the music he heard gave him the unique way of thought he has.

there's "influence" and there's something a bit more than that which is scarier IMO, when someone creates a track so it will sound like a track they like (instead of making their own unique thing and being influenced by a track they like, for instance).

all points noted.

Obviously i realise it is impossible not to be influenced by what we hear. But do any of you just sit at home and all of a sudden an idea pops into your head? That is what i mean, when you are not listening to music and you just jump on your computer and try your luck, without any outside influences.

welkl of course were all influenced..
nmost of us here are making psytrance, arent we?
i mean, it wasnt us who created this style, and i bet everyone here uses kick drums, hihats, and usses bass lins in their tracks,..so obviously you cant make somehting that is 100% original. and the fact that we do this is probably because we heard other music that did this, even though we maybe create something that is new, doesnt follow the standard formulas for dance music that seem to exisat so much, were still automatically influenced by it.,..
i mean, i confess, i uisuallky use four to the flopur rythms in my stuff.

i guess an idea can come from anywhere, any piece of music
ill tend to be listening to something, and just think ' that sound is cool, i want to do something like that'.. in this sense, tis more the synth sounds i copy, rather than rythms, melodise, and riffs.. after all, thats when music starts to become a rip off. its acceoptable to hear a tacka nd to want to recreate the synth sound used... afterall, pop and rock groups have een using guitars, pianbo for years without worrying people will think theyre ripping them off,or theyre ripping someone else off

on the other hand, smoetimes ill jsut sit down and have a random jamming session playing with the controllers on one opf my synths, at the end il have created lots of new sounds, a few of them good and usable , and probably have come up with a fwe ideas for melodies and stuff...

i think the most people can be influienced is ont so much with the individual sounds or riffs, but the vibe, like to hear a gorlation track, and think 'i want to do something like that, dark, fairly hard, generally minimal ut with a fat bass, and gurning sounds..'
i reckon its in this aspect that people are influenced the most
