Infected Mushroom are Israeli ‘psytrance’ duo Amit Duvdevani and Erez Aien. They achieved huge props in the psytrance scene more than ten years ago with their classic albums The Gathering, Classical Mushroom and BP Empire. But their several albums have seen them gain a lot of mainstream attention as well as copping a lot of backlash from their original fans, who claim they have sold out. Indeed, they’ve relocated to the very birthplace of selling out, Los Angeles, and their newest album contains a lot of crossover across hip hop and metal. Having seen them play in Sydney the past two years in a row and deliver one of the best live electronic performances I’ve ever seen, I was eager to see how another year in LA had affected their show; and discover for myself whether there was any truth to the talk of their downward spiral, or if it was simply a myth created by angry hippies.

A tasty sound system courtesy of The Professor had been set up in the foyer, providing a nice soundtrack of funky psy-tinged electro while we were waiting for drinks. The beats were interesting and slow, making for a nice break when the 140BPM mayhem proved too much for the ol’ feet. Out on the main stage Raptor had taken to the decks accompanied by VJ Gora, who had dusted off his CD collection to have a whirl on the audio side of things as well as providing visuals for the evening. The visuals in fact were one of the most impressive things about the event: swirling fractal coagulations, dancing mushrooms, sonic buddas and the like . It’s really a real shame VJs don’t get more recognition as Gora is clearly among Australia’s most talented artists, across any field.

The crowd was quite varied, much more so than previous years and contained the usual excessive number of Brazilians and Israelis who always seem to materialise whenever Infected Mushroom play. They certainly didn’t look like the sort of crowd Raptor is used to entertaining, but he did an incredible job. The last hour or so he had the decks all to himself and he threatened to steal the show, perched like a spider over the decks tweaking the EQs and effects with an intense precision, the sort of skills often overlooked by psy DJs who are usually content to slide a fader and let the producers do the work. He peaked around 1:30am with a hectic mashed up remix of Voodoo People and Underworld that sent the crowd absolutely wild, cue for Duvdev to march out and start soaking up the applause.

Although there wasn’t much room left by Duvdevs ego, they still managed to squeeze the rest of the band on stage: Erez Netz on guitars, Silva de Vega on drums and percussion as well as Aien the quiet ponytailed prodigy perched behind a very large Edirol Midi controller. With Duvdev abandoning his usual post behind the mixing desk and computer to roam around the stage with a mic, combined with the Metro’s impressive lighting and stage setup they looked a lot more like a rock band than a live electronic act. Netz opened with one of his signature tripped out guitar solos ending with his famous ‘play guitar with teeth’ trick. The opening track was Becoming Insane, a single off the new album, and that’s exactly what started happening in the crowd: an Israeli flag was raised, girls jumped on shoulders and a mosh pit was formed as the entire Metro became a dangerous obstacle course of flailing arms and big shirtless guys protecting their girlfriends.

With drums and guitar heavy and present in every song, the experience of the visuals, sound and crowd combined made for an intense experience with the pace barely letting up the whole time. I was able to track the progression through their anthemic opening combo of Becoming Insanse, Deeply Disturbed and Cities of the Future but after that I gave up trying to keep track of things. Even with the band up on stage, one of the best things about an Infected Mushroom live show is the way they glue it all together. Each song is so smoothly mixed and modified with even the studio versions containing a bunch variations and changes that boundaries between songs essentially become meaningless.

The most significant change this year was the format: originally Infected Mushroom were a live electronic duo something along the lines of the Chemical Brothers. Last Saturday’s show more resembled a rock band with the classic combo of drums, guitar, vocals and keyboards. However, this combined with a backing of synths and electronics made for a very confused mix. With the guitar being a little too prevalent, the combination of live and sampled drums was a bit too much and left whole sections of the set sounding like a bad DJ screwing up a mix. Not that Silva isn’t a great drummer (his conga solo was one of the highlights of the night) but keeping up with a computer at 140 BPM for one and a half hours is basically impossible and I think they need to make a choice: live or backing, but not both.

Now don’t get me wrong, the music is still incredible: the moments where Erez gets lost on some nutty synth patch while Netz hammers away like a new age Jimi Hendrix still sends shivers down the spine, and their composition is interesting and accomplished enough to impress even the most technical of musicians. The problem (although I hate to single someone out) appears to be Duvdev who harbors a not-so-secret desire to become a rock n’ roll singing superstar. His voice first appeared on the Converting Vegetarians album (cited by angry hippies as the first turn of the downward spiral) and has been creeping steadily into more and more songs ever since. There’s nothing wrong with the lyrics which are catchy and often meaningful despite being grammatically infantile (“show me the reason why I wont get insane”?), and at times the crazy vocoded manipulation sounded quite fitting. The problem is he simply cannot sing and his ridiculous antics on stage (trying to strum the guitar while Netz plays, pulling out a baton and conducting the audience, smashing the drummers cymbals with his fist, drinking multiple beers…) detract from what is otherwise still a spectacular show.

With all their classical training and musical background, I find it hard to believe that he’s allowed anywhere near a microphone. But when one looks at the demure Erez sitting queitly behind his keyboards it is not hard to imagine him keeping his mouth shut when the older Duvdev’s six-feet of heavy metal muscle insists on taking center stage. And maybe it was just me but I swear at times I saw Erez turn to his partner and cringe as he kept the whole show running smoothly from his lone midi controller while Duvdev ran around like a crazed junkie, his eyes glazed over and arms spread wide as he seemed literally to devour the audience’s attention. If you’re reading this Duvdev, please for the love of music give up your dreams of becoming a singer and get back behind the controls. That’s what you’re good at and that’s where the band needs you, and if you must fulfil’ your fantasies then join a Swedish death metal group and bringing down our beloved Infected Mushroom.

Regardless of all this the crowd still obviously enjoyed themselves, and the long mashed-up encore that started out as Converting Vegetarians and ended up god knows where still left me in awe. However, I couldn’t help feeling a little disappointed after what I had witnessed in previous years. Doubtless the new format will win them the audience they want and deserve, but they need to be careful now that the price of exposure doesn’t include their musical integrity. I will eagerly be awaiting the next performance to see if the spiral continues or whether they get their act together and prove the angry hippies wrong.
