You can use anything as a waveform. The length of the waveform is what gives the waveform it's pitch so, for it to be tuned, exact lengths must be used.
So, what they did was they grabbed each syllable of the phrase and cut it separatly. Then to give pitch to each of them, they just loop it with a certain length so it works like a waveform in that pitch. It gives an awesome effect. Some high end sound design skills there.
