wow you just made me realize how long its been since I first started playing instruments; about 20 years since 5th grade and the clarinet... Im not the oldest guy, but I never had it put in perspective like this...
Which is probably why; I go by what sounds good to me, after all teh years playing instruments before finding digital means, its how my mind works...

When changing levels, it's useful to remember that each change in level by 6dB roughly equates to the use of one more or one less bit in the actual audio file. Given that most of us write music with a 16-bit final format in mind, you can see that it's not necessary to be too frightened increases in noise when changing volume (although such increases definitely do take place). For instance a bounced-down synth sound that peaks at -24dBFS still has 20 bits-worth of dynamic range and a S/N ratio 24dB greater than CD-audio, even though it's almost inaudible compared to your kick which peaks at -6dBFS. If you then decide to quadruple the level of the synth sound (which is something of am extreme mix decision to take, if you thought it was ok when you bounced it down! ), you increase your noise-floor by 12dB, which still leaves you with four times as much S/N ratio as the final CD will have.
Advice I've seen from professional large-format studio engineers recording big-budget productions all tends towards "24-bit digital audio is more accurate than our ears can perceive so don't worry, leave lots of headroom and just do your thing".
