Hey there guys, Ive just joined this amazing site and just wanted to ask a few questions on Psytrance and Darkpsy.
I have been producing music for just over 4 years now and have built a rather nice little studio space.. Nothing fancy though but it gets results.
My first question is and Im sorry if this is in the wrong section but I have just started to get more and more into Psytrance and darkpsy in particular.
I have been producing melodic trance for a while and some DnB but I am starting a new project and wanted to just ask some of the more professional guys on here a few things.
1/What is the structure in darkpsy?
2/is darkpsy just sonicly charged sounds and well produced soundscapes? no melodies? *I mean melody as in say psytrance* I know it is not just random sounds. It is more complex and intricate.
I have produced my first Darkpsy track or what I believe to be darkpsy so hopefully some of the pros on here can answer my question and give a little help to a new darkpsy producer.
I know this is a little forward with this post but I am just coming away from producing music with limits and need to just branch out and create and express myself in a way that melodic trance or progressive trance cant do for me!!
Any help would be great guys and I would fully appreciate it all.
Thank you in advance and many returns and take care!!

I'm not a pro, but I've got some advice for you anyways...
1) Listen to music in the genre you want to make. Music that you really like, what sounds are used? how is it arraged, and so on... Take the best ideas from each track and combine them into somthing new and great...
2) Don't let the all the talk about genres take the creativity out of your music... Be creative, don't focus too much on "rules" and genres.

Don't do that. If you do it you'll just be copying someone else's ideas. The music you call 'darkpsy' has no structure. There are no dos and don'ts, you can create whatever you feel as music. There are quite alot of melodies in the heavier night time sound...even if a lot of ppl can't hear them. The whole structure of sounds is a big melody and every little sound by itself plays a melody on it's own.
The main idea behind that sound is to be able to express your feelings/visions/thoughts without anything limiting you. The most driving part of such sound is the kb line, which is like the 'floor' of the music. A strong kb line gives you a stable ground on which to step. Than you just close your eyes and let loose the power of your mind. You can use absolutely any sound/instrument. Just be creative and make something original and fascinating! Triplag Music

lol, I agree with both of you, its something i've slowly discovered, however, I know exactly what question he is asking, cause i'm still trying to figure it out.
Structure is still something that confuses me, the timing and length of things.
It would be easier if music was really like that, 16bar intro, 32 bar lead in, 64 bar main dance thingy after the break etc etc.
The problem with music is its based on maths, so its easy to say "this structure will be groovy", cause it will be.
Its the thing i love most about making music, being able to make noise that sounds awesome

Hey 'zoot', these links might help you-
Psytrance as a genre-- http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~easwaran/papers/psytrance.html

If you are interested in dark kind of psy, I'll recommend keep your dimension open and flexible for other genres, cause anything thats goes with too much of compression and too much of BPM speed, it tends to give you aural fatigue. And also dynamics of other genres might give you much diverse spectrum for inspiration.
Tip: Do not ever, I repeat, do not ever do synthesis and mixing and even mastering with your headphones on. Rely only on monitors, until and unless you are doing the live recording, and still try not to make any change to the track with your headphones on. For the purpose of defining stereo - monitor your monitors pretty accurately. |

commercail trance is most of the times at major scales, whereas psytrance is most of the times at minor scales. for happy fullon melodies, choose a note for bass, for example A, and then bulid your melodies from the chord of A, so it would be A,C,E and G sometimes for the big chord.
for mean melodies play on the half tone a lot (if you choosed A for bassline so bulied your melody with some A and some Bb) and don't change the note of the bassline too much.
i think that at psytrance the leads are have to be much crazier than at commercial trance. do a lot's of automations on your sounds. and choose from beginning crazier sounds than at commercail trance.
you have to explore it yourself ofcourse, good luck with it! |

Actually, change the note of the bass much, cuz using the same bass in the whole track is boring.
