I'm wondering what do you think about pro speaker stands for your monitors. Do you think that they actually are necessary to take the best out of your monitors or not?
What happened to me is this.
I have the Behringer Truth B2031, which the majority in this forum consider as at least not good and serious monitor for music production.
Anyway i was reading before my purchase about the importance of having pro speaker stands and how necessary they are in order for the speakers to sound as they should be(not considering at this stage room acoustics). So i bought at the same time with my Behringer's the Atacama Nexus 10 speaker stands.
The first audition was absolutely great, but of course i thought that it was from upgrading my monitors and not because of the stands.
A couple of weeks after i met another producer and when going to his home studio i saw the same behringer's as mine standing on a shelve attached to the wall. Then he played for me some of his new tracks and the sound was literally terrible. I made all the necessary settings on the back panel of the monitors to match the demands of his room, but still no significant improvement on the sound. I couldn't beleive my ears. The same monitors with the same almost settings(our rooms are almost the same) having such a sounding difference. So the only thing i could think about that it was responsible for that was my speaker stands. My friend also couldn't beleive it when he visited me and listened how my speakers sound.
The conclusion is that the next day he ordered the same speaker stands with mine and the problem was solved ever after.
What do you think? |

the importance of speaker stands is in
the fact that they nead to be solid and
heavy in order that the sound of your monitors wont make the room or things in the room resonate. wich would change the overall
frequency response of your room and cause muddines sometimes.
therefore once you have heavy massive stands
for example a hollow wooden stand full of
sand inside will do a good job. |

It is also to stop the speakers moving back each time the woofers are pushed out. And also so you can setup the speakers away from walls.
Ideally you want your speakers to be flush mounted. But you need the room and the money to do that ... |

"The sweet spot is when most recordings sound natural, when the timing is right efficiency and accuracy are both boosted. This translates into a better match between speaker and room. Speakers have a multitude of problems. Poor efficiency, poor linearity simply top the charts, But speaker location tops them all."
"The distance between speakers and their distance from the rear wall is a triangle which has the correct timing to allow the reflections from the sides and rear to combine with the fundamental music signal that is appearing between the speakers"

I think a huge problem is no one ever really sets up their monitors right(hell we aren't pros with doctorates in audio phyiscs are we?), does it really matter? because how well CAN you phsyically set up your monitors. Do you have the capability, is your room shaped properly? there are so many ridiculous variables for proper monitoring, which is why it's a huge business...
i guessi t does matter, but i find jsut putting it on a solid object that doesn't move is fine. But i know so many pros who don't do that at all. So why should u really care? It's the over emphasis on trying to be a pro with unpro gear.
then again, whose going to listen to your music, people with perfectly situated monitors, or people at a party? where speakers often have odd reverberations. or people at home with audophile sound equipment? or other producers?
I guess i just don't understand over emphasizing things. I don't think you'll get much better sound by using them. I think if you're that concerned, you should really invest in better monitors first... |

Woggle - lets not care about anyone else... lets do what feels good for us...
if we can use knowledge to our advantage, lets do it..
but i also understand that there are lots of aspects to consider....
anyway
you are correct that we should not emphase certain thing too much, then the rest of our knowledge will get burried....
Ps,
about those monitors you talk about... yes they are important, but lets not emphasis it too much, i dont think you will get any better sound if you have a bad acoustic environment...
laters... |

Last weekend i put my monitors on speaker-stands as well, and it made a remarkable change in soundquality. It's one of the easiest and most affordable ways to enhance your monitoring.
recommended ! |

I own quite expensive stands, but you can easily built your own with even better quality.
Use a heavy base, - then either wood ( 4 banels tightly put together as a frame) or a large PVC pipe. Feel it with playsand... the heavier the better.
3x the weight of your speakers would be perfect. All this shouldn't cost you more then 30/50$. much cheaper then my pro stands and better.

I built my speaker stands from oak bannister posts. 3 posts per stand. They are heavy, stable, and sound great. |
