how important is that procedure?
how often should I do it?
what are the actions to keep the HD working fine without being to overloaded with crap

the more u work with samples, the more important is it.
how often ? -weekly, or bevore rec a track.
...it isn t such a big work, u can t do it too much i think...;-)=

when i have a large HD it takes long time untill the work is done

...how big is your drive ? 1 tera ? ;-)=
if u make it often enough, it shoudln t take u that much time...a nearly defragmented disk takes u some secnds until win recognize that it isn t that messy.
if it still takes much time (...would be very strange ) put a disc in a get some influences.

Run defragmentation tool included in any Windows OS - it will detect automatically if you need to defrag or not. Anyway it is recommnded to defragment once a week if you are working a lot with your IO (HardDisk).

System disk fragmentation depends not only on programs you install or copy to ... Most of the computers configured to hold the virtual memry on the same disk as system. First of all it is recommnded to hold it on separate drive, even disk, or if not to defrag the system drive too, since widows uses a hell lot of virtual memory.

its good to defrag when u cleared alot of space in your hdd
i do defrag about once in two weeks on my system patiotion....

Defrag is most important on the samples (wav) disk. Especially when you're playing few channels at a time.

AFAIK Defrag is not the healthiest thing for PC's after all. You should consider backing up your important material before attempting Defragging.
I had some friends who fucked up their HD with frequent Defragging routines.
It's a good idea always to have 2 HD's when one of them is used for backups.
