I have an i-mac 27 inch i3 3.2 ghz with 8 gig ram, flawless, 30 plus tracks open in live or logic with a ton of plugs on top, and this machine is smooth like a baby's ass |

The power of any recent imac would see you through a lot! Even if you work only with a computer. Where it lacks is in the expansion possibilities. Unless it can be connected via usb or firewire you have no additional expansion possibilities. If you decide to take it further along the road, the design of the imac limits you in some ways. (a mac pro is hugely overpriced though, so an imac is a superb starting point) Because of this, and my insatiable need for dsp cards, i had to go the hackintosh route, which is not without it´s problems!!!
It still beats spending almost 4000 euro for an expandable desktop mac. In the end it depends on how you work. For me a computer is simply the point where everything ties together, a glorified tape recorder and mixer thus i need multiple connections to the real world. An imac is ideal for anyone wanting to work strictly inside the box, i really cannot think of a more useful computer setup than that for ITB work.

I got my quad 2.66 Xeon processor MacPro for 1370 quid in 2006! Using the education discount store, but still, it was like 1700-1800 GBP normal price. And 4 Xeon processors can handle a lot!
Nowdays the 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Nehalem MacPro is 2k GBP.
4000euros? unless you absolutely need 8 processors?!
True that Macs are overpriced, but not that much.

Well that is more or less the price for a stock model mac pro granted it´s the most expensive of the stock configs (i tell a lie...A 12 core is well over 5000 Neuro´s), but a BTO one can run into even more dough. Still around 2500 for the cheapest one is pressing it to the max!
After the g5´s went out of style, all the hardware has been very far from custom (expensive) designs and very close to intels reference designs (much cheaper). What i like about desktops is the fact that i am not pigeonholing myself too much with regards to the expansion options available to me. Fortunately my needs are fully met with my hackintosh and it´s not so fashionable core2duo cpu. Normally i would not say macs are overpriced, and i have been a very satisfied user for many years. But....the mac pro´s are overpriced. Not so much for the hardware and the insane processing power you get but simply because i have very little to use all that power on, making the most of that investment useless in my eyes (adding the fact that 2 high power cpu´s are not exactly more friendly to the power bill)
The price of mac pro´s has to do with intel only allowing dual cpu configs using their very expensive xeon processors, whereas there is nothing keeping them from offering their I series up for the same purpose (it´s a hardware lock in) The reason is simple, make more money! One Xeon can run above 1000 dollars in lots of 1000, whereas the I series cost many times less (a xeon does very little an I7 cannot do for end users) So thank you Intel! Thank you very much. Apple could naturally start offering less overpowered configs for more normal use and i would be interested again, provided the fans are not custom designs as in the g5´s....I need a very very quiet computer and i still have bad dreams about the sound of a g5 under heavy loads.
