Hi all you wizard of sonic manipulation

I’m looking at buying an Imac desktop as my dedicated music production computer, keeping my pc laptop for my gaming and net surfing, and was wondering what was the best option?

My budget isn’t very high but I can afford at the end of the year to get the 20-inch 2.4Ghx Imac with 4 gig of RAM.

Would this suit for starting off in a studio or would I be better saving for another model?

I’ll be running FLStudio and Cubase, as well as of course VST’s and soft-synths plus midi keyboard and eventually a Virus TI.

Thanks for any advice.

Regards,

Pepper

Well Mac Pro is out of the question, as I'm currently also saving for something much more expensive.

If my limit is the price of what I stated above then, would I be better to get a dedicated pc desktop and wait for a Mac in a few more years?

yeah just chatted with a guy I know who works for Toshiba.

He said unless I run Logic I can build myself a high end dedicated PC desktop for less than a Imac.

Especially as I already have my monitors, an Edirol Ua-25ex and a midi keyboard (old and needs to be updated LOL).

Logic isn't the only reason to buy a Mac. I chose to invest in one because OS is a lot cleaner and easier to use than XP (not to mention Vista) and because Live and Cubase run a lot better on a Mac than an equivalent PC...this is no secret and applies to most applications. Most vsts are available for Mac..the only thing you might miss out on is freeware. Yes, you can get an equivalent PC for less than a Mac, but a lot of that power is going to the operating system...so you'll end up needing better PC components to match it, and by then you'll be paying the same amount.

All my opinion, as always..

sergeantpepper, here's my suggestion: Buy a Macbook. The iMac isn't very flexible and the Mac Pro is overpriced. You can use it as a desktop replacement, and if you end up getting another desktop PC, you can use it to play live and when you aren't at home.

You def need some reference to that statement, do you have some benchmarks to back it up, otherwise its just plain bull

hey..yer a macbook is nice for live but not as desktop replacment imo..the fan noise sucks and the new macbooks dont even got firewire anymore..

ask in your local apple store if they can organize a demo mac from a trade show or someting..always 2-3 hundred € cheaper than as usual..

I have worked on both PC and Mac intensively and could not disagree with you more! They are both equally good and equally shitty. Both have perks and both have areas that suck. Vegetal, please don't ask me to back up my experience when it comes to PC and mac. Since it is my experience please also don't tell me this is bull!

Everything I said is completely based on my opinion and experience, as I stated. I went from a PC (xp) to an "equivalent" Macbook using Live, Cubase, and Photoshop, and in my opinion, Mac won by far. I'll agree with Upavas that they both have their ups and downs, and I'm not saying that any Mac is better than any PC, but when it comes to my preference and experience on both ends, don't tell me I'm wrong.           You believe in the users?

Well what i meant is by saying is that your previous statement isn´t really an opinion or an experience, more of a fact don´t you think?

I guess the results might vary a bit depending on what software you test, but when it comes to Ableton all benchmarks I have seen performance is a bit worse under OSX than XP on a bootcamped machine....and Ableton is a quite mac focused company so I would be a bit surprised if Cubase is better optimized for OSX.

The biggest problem with cubase is that there is no 8core support..it just doesn`t undestand 8cores..so there is for example an big advantage on Logic..           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-
