Hello guys!
im having my autumn frustration about my production! it comes in waves and it hinders me from working with my music in a positive way!
i get stuck in comparing commercial tracks against my silly undone tracks! that lacks omph and width....
and im so disappointed, i just cant get my baseline and kick right.... i try lots of things and it just turns out bad! im so far away from happy that i cant finish a single track, i always come to a point where nothing sounds good and i have to stop and start with a new project that i know will have the same outcome...
my brother tells me to at least make a whole tune even if it dosent sound as good as i want it to(of course he is correct).... but i just cant work when im unhappy(or at least i get unhappy when i start to compare)....i start to twist the knobs of the eqs and compressors when i dont even have 2mins worth of music.. and poff of to the next project to find some luck.....
i can have a cool motif and things i think sound cool but it always boils down to the lack of "omph" and thin sound picture...
is practise and time the only help a frustrated soul can get?
anyway its interesting to see how the mind works, we create electro impulse patterns in our brains so next time we do similar tasks the brain will automatically connect the same way as it did before... if we dont break these patterns....
i dont think anyone can help me, i get positive feedback from friends that make music but i need positive feedback from my self, im not happy with how it sounds and i dont know how to change this....
laters all music makers!

don't compare you tune with released tracks all the time, compare it with the tune you did b4 that one and be happy that its sounding better!
it takes a lot of time and dedication to get a good sound...
Experimentantion brings knowledge
Good luck, and don't get too frustrated, as Darpsy just said, that has happened to each and everyone of us theres always some times of frustation |

Hey man i had the same problem like 8 months ago now i am doing fine with basslines the trick is the Kick and the bass compression and EQ...Find a good bassline sound and a good kick then on the bass chanel open an EQ / Maxx Bass / Waves Rcomp, these are how i EQ/Compress my bassline to the kick. On the kick open an EQ and Rcomp again...Experiment with the plugins and look on the internet for info on compression...Another hint would just keep on listening to tracks until your hearing will reach a higher level, it takes lots of time, love and dedication and never give up one day your dream will come true like all of us! I started 4 years ago used to make ambient and now 2 years making trance and still not 100% happy with the result! but soon will be happy...
Good luck mate

I know the feeling. It's like a tide, it comes and goes. Especially the recurring nightmare with the bass+kick combo is really annoying.
What helped me a lot recently, was
~getting a proper synth for making basslines~
I tried loads of VSTi's, read and tried shitloads of tips from forums, articles and books, bought monitor speakers and still it sounded wimpy. Although of course all knowledge you gain about mixing will be useful at some moment in the future
Also, the
~sidechain compression tip~
(courtesy of Colin OOOD) was a breaktrough.
And constantly A/B-ing your sound with commercial cd's isn't such a bad idea.
Also, remind yourself that it wouldn't be fun if you made songs with killer basslines if everyone could make them just like that. It's a black art, and it takes time to get good at a black art |

first of all remember a cd track is mastered by an expert so comparing is always tricky.
My advise to you is to upgrade your monitors and room acustics so you will hear exactly what you dealing with and get a better resaults. next you can start reading metrial about EQ, Compressor, mixing and SOUND in generally. better understanding of those will get you a better resaults.
good luck and cheer up man! |

FluoSamsara speaks truth.
Compare your latest track with your earlier tracks, take solace in how much closer it sounds to what you want.
There is no use feeling that your music doesn't sound 'as good' as the pros - they are simply further down the path than you, just as you are further down the path than others.
Find things about your music that you *do* like. The things that you don't like, these are simply places where you can keep working/studying/learning.
All things in time man...
Patience, and keep tweaking. |

"writters block" dont you just hate it,instead of critisising myself when this happens to me(alot) i cleanout my sample files by preveiwing them in sound forge or whatever and delete those "never used yet" ones andmess around with any potentials by stretchin or cutting up.At least then i feel as though i`ve done some work but also kept off logic for a spell. You might stumble over a wav that you previously missed and the ball starts rolling again. Also try and isolate the exact frustration and just work on that.If all else fails 50`s rock and roll tunes and a spliff!
Why is chopsticks one of the easiest songs to play on the piano, but the hardest thing to eat with? |

Hey m8s
thank you everyone for your words of wisdom...
this was just the kind of words i needed to hear...
*i cleanout my sample files by preveiwing them in sound forge or whatever and delete those "never used yet" ones and mess around with any potentials by stretchin or cutting up. At least then i feel as though i`ve done some work*
* keep tweaking and explore new sounds*
*everything takes time*
* compare it with the tune you did b4*
*good luck and cheer up man!*
*Find things about your music that you *do* like*
*get a vacation*
*If all else fails 50`s rock and roll tunes and a spliff!*
i just went through a map of samples and deleted a few...i think whats making everything so dizzy is all those unfinished tracks and hundred´s of savefiles with almost the same content...sometimes 10-15 copys of a tune in progress....its silly! i need to stick to one or two different savefiles and delete the old unused...
writers block for sure....and it will probably get me into a new era of music production...
im going to study more music and start a new tune that has nothing to do with psytrance... just to get away from the genre i want to spend most of my time with...
Ganjagil thanks for your offer, very kind of you... but i think its okej... i will sort this out if i change my mind ill drop you a mail...
im going to change my way of producing and start to devote more time into each separate sound...
again thanks all for your encouraging words and words of truth
laters all... |

Hey man yeh like others said why bother to compare with released tracks? I make my music jus for playing live, se the thread on what you use live, and I knwo that really it is probably crap compared to alot of released music, but I do it for fun, and I have noticed that n the last year, although I had kinda mucked around with stuff for the last four, since playing live my skills have grown hugey, especially when it comes to prgramming synths and stuff... with patience comes amazing things |
