This is a question to all music producers and labels...

Although I don't doubt of the honorable intentions of many artists, I was wondering if any artist/label has been contacted by sample factories such as ILIO, Best Service or Spectrasonics on the use of their samples in tracks.

Many times I agree it may be difficult to recognize, but nowadays while listening to new stuff coming out I keep on hearing the same whooshes, snare hits, sci fi fx and other samples found on commercially available and also very expensive sample cds.

Do artists actually buy these? Somehow I doubt it considering that your average sample cd can easily hit the 500-1000$ mark. But I don't want to point any fingers. I'm just curious if anyone knows of an occurence where a track has been under dispute for using a sample.

Thanks for any input

i don't think it has been disputed yet, mainly because of the fact that most psytrance is unknown to the large public. But i know it's highly illegal... u don't buy the cd with the samples, what u actually buy for 500€ is the licence to use those samples.

Anyway, i don't even understand why people use sample cd's to make psytrance. Sample cd's are made for companies who make music because they need music, not because they want to make good music (example: for movies, games,...). To those people sample cd's are essential because it eases their workflow significantly (which makes for lower costs, so they actually gain money by buying sample cd's). But people who make music because they want to make good music should stay away from these sample cd's i feel...

I don't think Sample factories entre in contact with the artists, because they created their CDs with free right of use.
by my opinion I think the question is not of using or not the sample cds as they are legally, but How to use them, to change them completely as you wanted them, and I'm sure niether the labels not the sample cds' factories will know it anymore, I think this is the art of producing

Peace.

speak for yourself

no limits to psy. you can do whatever you want, using whatever method you want...as long as you put some exstra effort in there to keep it interesting.

i was attracted to this music a couple of years ago because of the no limits factor. there are to many can&cant`s these days. to many catogories-dark,full-on,melodic,happy,morning,daytime, night time, whatever... it contradicts what this music is supposed to be.

whatever comes from the soul is good. can be played at any time. can be produced anyway you feel like producing it.

at least, this is the way i feel about it. i know many will disagree with this.

Thanks for all the input, it is very helpful, but I must add I wouldn't be bringing up this topic if I hadn't on many occasions recognized well known samples in MANY tracks which are being released today (I've counted one sample in at least 14 tracks)

Anyways I agree with damage that people should do what they want how they want, but I'm curious where people draw the line. I understand that using samples legally or illegally is generally tolerated. How about sampling other artists?
