when Im rich and famous Ill buy everything but right now, Im broke and jobless
But I do have some standards. I try not to use 'demo' software in studio work. Ive got a ton of great freeware that does 'almost' as good, more often than not I end up using freeware.
And I paid for Renoise But my license expired at 2.5, so I have to renew to get the new version. So Im using 2.5.
First on my must-buy list of commercial software; ABL2
LOL @ waves diamond purchasers, I almost fell over when i saw the price of those at Guitar Center, for that price, I can get a 303 with enoguh left for a Mopho rack

I must say, that finally getting new (maybe expensive) sofware feels way better than just downloading stuff.
Im so exited every time until it arrives...then the unpacking. And them I am really happy that I got that stuff.
When I was using cracked stuff it was just like downloading...using it...and thinking "meh...another piece of software"...no exitement, no happiness. And then a pile of not used software amassed on my HD which I partially never used, or just used once to see how cool it is....
Now, when I have payed (sometimes a lot) for a new piece, Im really eager to explore it, use it as much as possible...Im just more motivated.
For me its the same with mp3's/Albums.... The mass of downloaded stuff I dont listen very often to. But those things I bought (all stuff lately) I enjoy much more somehow. it worth more to me...even if that makes no sense....
Oh, and yesterday I got a big new paket I waited for a long time and payed quite much(komplete 7). But im so happy now to finally have it...

i dont like gathering to much vst's...
i mainly use
Sylenth 1
Alien 303
Nexus
Vanguard
with those i can pretty mch get any sound i need or want to make. The rest is freeware.
I just think its right to pay these people back. These are good programs..some of the best. Some guy came to my house to hang and he had a hard drive illwed with vst's and stuff..he had the whole Komplete thingy ,Ozone Isotope, like at least 5000 dollars worth.it was crazy.

Well, I`m proud to say I have not used one single peace of cracked equipment ever since I started making music. Whenever I demo something, its the demo given to me by the maker of the program. And I have some free VST`s of course.
However, I am aware of the fact that I started producing pretty late compared to others (at 31years old) while I was already earning a very good salary in my day job. I actually started making music with my christmas bonus... And if I was still in college, I would sure as hell only use cracked software as well, hahaha

I think you need a good period of time with software to know what is essential to your work. As immoral goes...well...you have to follow what you think is right. Buy the software that you use everyday If the guilts are getting to you.
Companies like primark and adidas use child labour in 3rd world countries, a lot of big corps don't give a shit as long as they are making profits.
Some say Steinberg benefited from cracked versions of their software on Atari ST back in the day, and helped them grow. Some daw soft companies may benefit from "try before you buy" versions, rather than limited featured demos. After giving the product a full test with a crack, you may want a bug free stable bought version.
For years we have been told that the music/movie industry will die off because of pirating.Folk have been swopping for years, far play torrent apps have made it a massive movement. How much did Avatar cost to make???
It's not nice or clever to use cracked softeware, and I think we should suport good companies making good products, especially smaller companies.........having said that Microshaft and Apple won't get any money from me for the time being |

When I started producing music I pirated absolutely everything. Here in estonia is it so common that most of youths probably never bought any software in their lifetime. Its probably related with relatively low incomes.
But at some point, I felt need to do it the "right" and hard way and bought flstudio and z3ta and started using freeware alternatives.
I think that being limited is really good to gradually learn tools.
Also if you have everything, then it is hard to appreciate it.

How about if i steal a guitar... can i earn money playing in the streets without being immoral??
I were maybe immoral the very minute i stole the guitar? Regardless of whether i earn money with it or not?!
To me, the 'earning money'-argument is kinda vague... it means that i can steal guitars as long as i don't earn money with it Maybe it's just a way for amateurs to justify their piracy?
So.. what if i sold the guitar, and BOUGHT a new one - could i THEN earn money witout being immoral??
Cheers |

if piracy didn't exist many people wouldn't even start making music.. specially young people!
not everyone has rich parents that buy them gear, macbook pros, software and fancy guitars to hang on the wall..
a lot of producers started with at least some pirated stuff, like the daw and some synths. and they ended up buying legit copies.
try, like and buy asap.

Well, rich parents are not needed.. you could also get a job instead
On a sidenote, it's not hard at all to make music for free. There are several free/shareware DAWs, and there are TONS of free VST instruments and effects... just saying |

exactly , u already have to get a job to buy HARDWAREZ even if u dont intend to take it profisional if u dont have the so called rich parents...
i think digital plug ins and vst will always be taken as a bonus by people who are not money "lucky" coz u already have to give a lot for the hardwarez... at least a good cpu, a good soundcard a good monitor and a good controler....
dependin of the country u are just those basics can cost u a fortune...

I say the prices are too immoral ... even 200$ for sylenth is a rip off .
Half of the music now would not exist if not cracked softs.
The prices are insane !!! They really diserve being cracked.
If the piece of soft costs me 1000$ i would crack even if i wont use just for the satisfaction of srewing those guys back.
If a guy would come to me and try to sell me a piece of bread for 2000$ i would probably steal it and feel great about it.
Sorry, but i don't feel sorry about rich pigs wanting to get even richer.
Now who owns cubase ??? And how much does it cost ???
