To reduce the noise floor, you should always bounce or export at the highest level possible without clipping...it will give you cleaner results overall....

if you increase a sample in volume that was recorded at a lower level to get more out of it, you are also applying amplification to the noise along with the recorded sound.

assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

on the other hand working with signals that peak at 0 db is a risky business, because then even something simple like a filter could push them above 0 db, thus clipping your sound.

That isn't true, if you apply a filter you apply it in a 32 bit (or 64 like Reaper, Sonar...) floating point environment (even if you work on an 8 bit sample), daws works in floating point, not in integers, maybe that's why audition has an option "Data->Autoconvert to 32 bit on opening".

Floating point can go some hundred dB over 0dB, that's the result of floating point variable scale, the limit is not 0dB like in integers.
If you go beyond 0dB you can lower the volume of the result and you are ok, no clip.
If i'm correct pro tools use 48 bit integers, don't know how it works but it could be different.

A 24 bit (integers) wave that peaks at -6 dB use a maximum of 23 bits (in his peak).
A 16 bit (integers) wave that peaks at -6 dB use 15 bits.

Then you would just turn down the fader.           assumption is the mother of all fuckups.

noise floor is not really a issue in most setup , some of the best analog consoles ever made have noisefloor around -70 db for example .it s not something to worry except if you have noisy hardware gears. (same for loosing some resolution,in 24 bit it s not a problem)

Mistake, where i've said "mantissa" i mean "exponent" and vice versa.

Another mistake, sometimes i'm out of head , i've said "24 bit is integer, 16 and 32 bit are floating point,....", of course this is not correct because 16 bit isn't floating point, 16 bit is integer... how can i write such things?
