I have Ghost v9 (legit) and it fucked up on me bigtime recently; I no longer trust it.

Acronis Truimage is meant to be more reliable.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I've used ghost for the last 6 years or so and I too had a problem with an earlier version, so I decided to try Acronis but it screwed up with no fix, so I decided to go back to ghost which I prefer for its simplicity in image file compared to acronis. I've been using my 2003 version without any problems for a few years now.

Same as Colin, has massive fuck up with a legit version of Ghost. I don't trust it either. It wouldn't restore the image and all kinds of lies about it not being a compatible Ghost image despite making the image using that same version.

The best option is to buy a spare hard disk and use a clone tool, so if your original drive goes poop you can literally just pop the other one in and keep working without worrying about restoring from an image.

Saves from having loads of DVD which could get damaged and you don't have to throw away old ones when you do a new clone.

Yeah never back up to DVD's that's a big mistake!

Acronis allows you to backup to an external harddisk. This way if ever anything messes up you can just run acronis & restore to a state when everything was fine. Its saved me a bunch of times.           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

I've used ghost 2003 for years with good success. I have not used newer versions of ghost, but being in IT for many years I'll give you a very simple rule: if the word 'Norton' is in the title, don't use it, ever! If the word 'symantec' is in the title, it's probably a sound product. Yes, I know they are the same company, but trust me on this one.

Norton ghost 9 = sucks ass
Symantec Ghost 2003 = worked for me time & time again.

I have since moved to Acronis, as it is vastly superior.

The problem with ghost images is that the restore uses the same hardware abstraction layer (HAL) that it was created with. If you are using a different machine, a different drive, and more specifically, a different drive interface, the HAL it is using might not work, or get things wrong. This is the typical reason why things can get fucked up with ghost, and probably the reason you got the 'not a compatible version' message.

Acronis has a 'universal restore' product (an add-on product for the trueimage restore) which detects the hardware you are using, and chooses an appropriate HAL. It will likewise try to detect the hardware drivers needed, or give you the options to load the drivers from a location.

Acronis works with many 3rd party applications, like ghost images, virtual machines, etc. Despite all the features, the interface is actually not difficult to use, and so I don't hesitate to recommend it to anyone. If you have volume shadow copy service running, you can backup an image while windows is running (no rebooting to a command prompt shell).

How's this for cool: Create a backup image in acronis (or with vmware converter), restore it to a virtual machine, and now you have a test environment for all software without having to actually install it. That virtual machine image & player are portable (less hardware, obviously).

P.S. if you are just going to use a clone tool to a seperate hard drive, you might as well setup software disk mirroring, or raid 1.          Keep The Faith,
Christian K.
