Hi peoplez. I want to purchase a computer for making music. Can someone please suggest something. I am thinking about buying a PC and not a mac... Because I have used pc's all my life. I was thinking about a Sony Vaio. What is a good brand to purchase?

u wanna buy complete system or so u wanna built with ur own selected components?

first is easier and faster(mostly) but with building by urself it is maybe cheaper and u just can select the hardware u want.

maybe best is to go to compi shop in your neighbourhood and talk to the guys there           Signature

Use the search Luke. We already talked billions of times about recommended components.           Everyone in the world is doing something without me

SONY vaio is not a good choice, they run slow and are under powered. THey come with too many programs and gadgets for the system to handle, and benchmark significantly slower than most other brands.

vaios have been that way since they came out years back.

Mac is the standard platform, but if you arent nutty serious about making music, building your own PC or buying one made by a small shop is definately the way to go.

Sorry Pavel but i don't agree with you on this one...buying a computer its a big deal and this market is allways changing... so what you suggest? Search for old posts?
For me the good thing about the forums is sharing point of views! You dont think the same all the time so you need new posts
even if the issue was debated two months ago...
Maybe you could do "The Mother of All Computer Specs..."
Anyway for me the answear DJ Kontakt is buy a computer specially assembeled for audio production i did it and is a mean machine!!!
One example: http://www.inta-audio.com/script/workstation.php?mode=R&cats=SYS6%20MON%20UPGSYS6SND%20UPGSYS6WIN%20UPGSYS6UQK&filtmode=AND&filtval=2

Good luck!!

im not saying to get a man, im saying that if you really plan on doing this and dumping time and money in to it, you should get a mac, otherwise get a PC, its much more useful overall as a computer.

If you get a mac and decide its not for you, you are stuck with a near useless computer

Nik--- that is bullshit and you know it. there. if you get a mac load it with lots of neat production programs and what have you adn then you decide that music making is not for you you are "stuck" with an amazingly stable machine, that runs incredibly fast, great customer service with apple etc etc etc           ein chadash tachat hashemesh. there is nothing new under the sun. --kohelet.

my advice, don't get a mac, a mac is simply amazing if you have a load of graphic work, but other than that you don't need it much. i ve worked on macs and it gets really annoying when u can not always find the right software version.. especially if you're planning on cracking softwares instead of bying the originals !
And I agree that the Sony Vaio might be a bit overrated.

and dont forget the one button mouse
Now as for what Lola said i agree on the subject about apps and especially if you re not buying original software (WHAT?!?! you re not buying original software?!?! tsk tsk tsk ) but i will disagree about the grafix stuff. People has the idea that mac's are superb for grafix only.well this is false. (go check what silicon graphics can do and then come and tell me that only mac's are for grafix) U can do anything either with pc either with mac. Mac's because of their operating system are more stable than pc's on xp. (but if you spend such money as you would for a mac then you can buy a veeery faast pc and with a little effort and help you can make it stable too.) The only reason i would buy a mac is to have logic 7 but i will wait for a year for the 'cheap' mac's I will agree also about the Vaio notebooks. You pay a lot just because they have the sony tag on it. And personaly i prefer desktop computers than laptops. And to end my post if you go for a mac the go for G5 for sure and if you go for a pc look somethin like p4 3Ghz,at least 1gb ram (and avoid no-name chips) ,a decent (but not too expensive) vga card, and one or two biiig hard disks (they re cheap nowdays..). Take a good motherboard for all that. A big case (so air can flow free in it) a Power supply unit of 450watt i think its enough. Good (and silent i prefer) fan. And beside what your choise will be, a good (but not expensive for start) sound card. Maudio audiophile (firewire) for example is a good choise in this range. And last but not least.. your precious monitors! monitors are another topic by itself...
** if you re planning to record audio (throu mics) then go for a more silent solution (sound-sheild case) and/or other ways of cooling **
(oh.. and about the learning thing of a new computer / operating system.. its not difficult. mac's are easy to learn machines:) )
