I think UnderTow meant exactly that but without mentioning it as it's taken for granted anywayz
By next week, i'll send you a downtempo track to master also.
Cheers,

.. DAT -- DA -- ANALOG EQ -- ANALOG COMP. -- AD -- DIGITAL PROCESSOR (S) -- DITHER -- UPSAMPELING (DOWNSAMPELING) -- DAW -- FINAL MEDIUM.
simple filtering/noise reduction/narrow band expansion/complex filtering/DC offset converters an much more ..
thats one way to do it, of course its only the tip of the tip of the process in Mastering, theres much (!!!) more to it.
im not trying to be a smart ass here, Ive learned the tip of mastering, BUT im not a mastering engineer.
pushing freq on VST eq and using L2/RBass to chock the track with gain will only make it worse. Even patching a Buss comp. on a done track will change the sonic characteristic and dynamics of the track, in a bad way.
you only gain volume and peaks, you MAY not hear distortion, i dont believe your room is fitted to Mastering duties, and im sure you dont hear distortion .. am i right ? can you hear distortion ? definitely not in Alesis M1 monitors.
my point here, it is fun to do what you trying to do, ive done that as well but taking a track to a whole different level will require real mastering facility which probably the cables that connect his DA alone worth much more then you think...
leave your track open and dynamic, dont worry about volume, thats the mastering engineer's work that labels taking care of before printing a final medium.
again not trying to insult anyone, im writing to those who thinking of releasing their tracks in the future. thats a tip.

DAT???? I thought this format died really long time ago.
And where's the limiter in your analog mastering chain?
And what do you mean by digital processors?
And what's Upsampeling and Downsampeling?
And why should he hear distortion if he knows what's he's doing, even in a room not fitted for "Mastering" duties with his Alesis M1 monitors and if the source mix is a well balanced mix without any distortion?
I don't really get your point(especially the cables thingy!!!). How would you do it? It seems like you have quite a distinct opinion/way of how mastering should be done.
Can you be a more specific?

I think synthetic music can be WELL mastered on a DAW.
For other music genres like the ones with acoustic instruments and vocals you DO need high end gear to mix and polish.

no, i actually it dident died, many mastering engineers print on DAT today .
i know a little about mastering but i dont do mastering, thats not my job, again, im not trying to insult anyone, im talking from experience that i had when i sent my tracks to be printed then i needed to re-master my tracks to a decent dymanic level, to master in a non fitted room for mastering and without the proper equipment could be a hassle. |

I'm very curious to know, why it is considered by many people that mastering is something that must be done with special hi-end equipment by special hi-end mastering engineers.
Why don't you say that mixing of your tracks should be done the same way, on special mixing equipment by special mixing engineer?
Better (or better known) equipment used - better the result (if the same person does the job) - that is all, isn't it? For every stage of production.

Better gear will not make you a better engineer, unfortunately many do think that better gear will do the job alone, which is not true.
but better gear will make your life easier and make your records sound much better. same as for mastering, high end mastering engineers like Bob Katz and many more do use high end gear as their standards are very high .. |

Yes, but for some reason noone says that good mix can be done only with hi-end equipment. What's the difference? Basically, the same compression, eq and listening...
