imho you cant make realy complex analouge style synths on reactor.,
i've been using the nord modular for years and with that experience i got reactor down to it's knees in 5 minutes (after reading the manual
most important limit i foud in reactor is that you cannot feed back the signal path.,.,
so what i mean to say is that you can make good sounds in reactor but you cannot do everything you can imagine.,
but that's just my experience..,
I think that with reactor you should focus on linearism.,.
adding soundsources together then pumping them through some sound mangling device then amplifier then outputs., just think straight.,
And from there on it's all about experience.,
Try out all modules one by one in a simple environment and see what they do to the signal.,
it's also important to READ what the modules do and understand it.,., the reactor manual is a little stupid in this respect because i often found they describe things unnessesarily complicated.,. but understanding the technical groundworks of a module is very helpfull if you want to add spice to your sounds.,.,
if you have decent audio and midi in and outs you might want to look for a secondhand nord modular because they are VERY cheap at the moment.,
also good for live because they all have some knobs to tweak.,, (i hate drawing or mousing controllers)
ooh.,., another good reason to use nord modular instead of reactor is that the internal controller rate of the nord modulat runs on 22050 herz., i think 3000 is the top in reactor.,
Also, internaly, audio and controller paths are equal so you can put any output on any input.,., this has some very interesting possibilities.,.,
also, i think that the user interface of reactor sux a bit.,., too much work to get anything simple done.,
but again, it's just me and my xperience., more people will need to write to this thread to make a more balanced opinion., .,
grtsm.,

I used to use reaktor 3 a lot, but since I got a hard sinth i stopped using.
I have reaktor4 for some time, but hadn't really spent much time on it...
Curious you put this post here, because just yesterday I decided to see what reaktor4 could do to my sound...and man!!!
Not only I was impressed with the sounds you can make with it, (junatic ensemble - super power leads , and many other great ones for atmospheres) but I was very impressed with the CPU usage of it, the version 4 is much better than the 3 in respect to this!
Totally agree with ZilDoggo about the knobs thing, its not really fun or practical (special when recording) to do it with mouse...but for ppl without hardware I definetelly believe this is the tool to choose
About making your own ensembles, man you just have to know how sinths work and how to connect each thing, its not really a thing that can be though in a couple of sentences...

Theres loads of free ensembles available on the net,
just take a few, see how they are built, try to make some changes, experiment

  experiment !
make it your motto day and night.
experiment,
and it will lead you to the light.
the apple on the top of the tree
is never too high to achieve,
so take an example from eve...
