My point of view from my experience.
First I think that "no inspiration" is not the same as being bored and depressive.
When I´m bored I can´t even start a track or loop. Or even worst, I make a full loop, and then I just quit. Assuming u know how to make a honest music, I would advise u to take a break as ppl said. Go refresh your mind, doing things that gives u pleasure without pain or so much concentration. Imo it´s more psychological than "practical" issue.
But sometimes u want to make music, but u are waiting for the magic inspiration moment. And it´s not like that... "I want, here it comes"...
I gave this advice at another thread, and maybe it could be nice here also. When this "no inspiration" hits u, try to change your methodology. For ex:
I always start with this sequence: Kick-> Bass-> Snare-> Single hits closed hats-> Closed hats loops-> OHH-> Hits/Reverses. I can do it easily, but it takes some hours maybe to get it ok. Then I go for synths and fx´s. And sometimes here´s the point when I get stucked. Maybe I can drop some samples, try some synths... But it all ends at 16/32 Loop, with some sounds, but no music.
So, I start a new project. And begin with the synths and samples. As with my "template sequence" I try to imagine what I really need. Like: 2x 2bar_PAD, 1x Main Lead + 2x w/ minor changes, 3x 2bar_loop with single shots with fx´s, 4x 1Bar_Synth Riffs, + several hits and psyco fx´s from synths and samples. And I just starts doing all the list. And here´s the BIG advice: do not bother that everything sounds right with each other, and make more layers than u´ve planned!!!
For sure it will take a long time, but again I advice u not to bother about quality or creativity. Just make a lot of sounds. And also u can experiment much more, as u are not guided for an annoying "kick bass loop mood".
Then I make my "kick-bass-drums" composing(wich is very easy, if u think about how many started songs with only this.. lol). And now sometimes the magic arrives! If u worked enough time, u will end up with plenty of sounds wich can be sequenced in many ways. Most often u will find very clever arrangements, and the inspiration can come back again.

It's a good thing you don't have any inspiration... it means you have the soul of an artist (as opposed to just a technician) and can't write music if you don't have anything to say. Many people seem to churn out track after track, but all too often the it sounds to me like they're just exploring the technology, rather than using it to write the music that's in their head and their heart.
Embrace your fear of not being able to write... take some of the advice given here and leave it alone for a while, have some life experiences, do stuff you've always wanted to do. Eventually you will find the music comes back - and if it doesn't, well, better to have had the experience, enjoyed it, done good work and been honest about its ending, than to try and flog a dead horse. In my humble opinion.

I agree with you Colin. Most of time this critic view has much more sense than anything else!
I just think it´s hard to get inspiration without the technician side. And I´ve got your point of soul-less music.
For me, I guess the technic guide my inspiration. Honeslty I have some really "no soul just hits+verbs" tracks. But also have some nice feelling music. And I´m not ashamed to say that all my music start with tech side(i will not say that thinking about the bassline is seeking for the soul, as even with not so similar bass, the other elements that makes the mood imo).
And you are 100% right about embracing your fears. For sure being only a technician is not nice for the music most of times. But I guess that some artists embraced the fear of releasing "no soul" music, and don´t know how, ppl like it!

I personally believe that music isn't a journey down a single track road. You arrive at your destination from several different starting points (very quantum?).
If you aren't progressing by hammering an avenue, switch to another area of music and it will unlock new doors. It's a lot like Sudoku!
Music encompasses every area of the brain.
I am still learning the piano, my ear training is on-going (both in terms of relative pitch and the dissection of modern electronic sounds and how they were created). Music theory gives new directions, other genres use different tricks..
The technical side of music is just icing on the cake, but a good idea will always shine through. Too much music is churned out noise with no spirit.

i still rather you to try my 1.2.3 advise before 4.
oh , and dont worry about album or anything mate.. when its the right time it will come... fuck this other peaple that make album within year from start producing this is what ruin the hole psy scene soundtrack.. anyone agree that alot alot of music realesed today is utter crap!
for me it took 6(!) years to make my first album.. and about 2.5 years that im working now on second and finnaly got 90% of the tracklist done.
i rather even to have wait more and have more perfect result.. but once its great for sure i love to see it out there hey..
its all about quality not quantity , i have another 2 albums almost ready that im not entirly sure about it, and even had couple of offers to realese it with nice labels but i decided to not do it.. and i think it was the right move.. if their time will come then it will..
i would rather you to get perfect track within a year rather making another avarege album in this year.. so maybe this looping procedure is not that bad after all..
btw if you still after a kick drum.. stay tuned i have new sample pack coming very soon! www.sattelbattle.com

What u are describing my friend, is what every body goes truh, thats just part of life.
You have to allow yourself to be unproductive as well. Its just part of the whole process. You cant push stuff out, but it will come again.. i think it has to really...
When i am feeling like any way u are describing,, then I am usually sitting and just tweaking some leads, trying to come up with a catchy innovative lead sound. Just funking around and relaxing without caring about where im going, is a nice way sometimes,, to make something, out of nothing..
Dont worry.. |

i can add these:
- try to do music for theater or dance plays.
every times i did that, i've composed music in a very different way.
-try to compose music with other friends.
new ideas and technics for everybody!
-you can also propose some music pedagogy.
i've learn a lot by teaching others!
-listen to classical music, contemporary experimental music, traditional music etc.

hey man i havent yet read what everybody says but this is my idea for you
If you not already play a instrument, start doing so..
and if you dont own a handy recorder of some sort, go buy one, i very much recommend Zoom H2, i love it!
Now go out in nature record the birds, go to mall record people, go to toilet and record the flush...
or why not just record when you play drum, flute, piano and start work around that.. bring it in to cubase and become more organic!
man you can record anything... i exactly know what you mean, i recently felt like an idiot, i mean wtf, i also feel stuck in a loop sometimes...
it helps to change your setup to a more live based setup..
also what i do sometimes when i feel im getting stuck in a loop, i mute all sounds but one, the sound i feel is the intro sound, then i let it go for some bars that i feel is good til i introduce the second sound if feel good about, and let them play together til i feel a new sound needs to say hello.... chiil out is perfect for this method and its also calms you down and take the stress away... remember try and not to introduce any drums for a long time... who knows, maybe never... or just bring out your darabuka or djembe or whatever and jam to the sounds and record... |

In my opinion, what you have is totally normal and there is an easy way out:
Try to make a bad song!
Seriously! Sit down in front of your gear and start making a bad song!
don't worry about production, story, sounds etc. just do it. make a bad song.
Is really liberating! No pressure, no expectations, nothing. just a song.
You don't even to make it especially bad. a little bad is already ok.
Try it. I'm serious.
