For the last couple of weeks my 'production' has been declining and declining
My head is just totally empty.
All inspiration is gone, and I can't even get myself together to explore some synths or whatsoever.

I just sit there behind my computer pressing buttons without any result.

I feel like I'm getting lazier and lazier by the year.

Downloading new synths, scrolling thru presets, throwing in fx, but it leads to nowhere.

Actually I'm quite sick of it, after years of struggling with no result I still find myself doing the same old same old same old thing:

Looping 16 bars in Cubase!!!

I feel like an idiot!

There are people who release full albums after just a few or even less years of practice, and I'm happy if I could just find a right kick.

Even when Dj-ing at home, I'm bored, don't feel motivated at all to make a nice set.

The biggest problem is that music is/was, music is what inspired me.
Without the music I don't feel like doing anything for a purpose anymore.
And slowly I'm excepting that I may not achieve anything at all with music.

Which really depresses me.

I'm just not getting ahead, but am still stuck somewhere in between the 1st and 16th bar of my loop, and I can't get out.

hey man, dont give up like that , search for alternatives within the hole thing of music production, for example spend some time on studying acoustics, maybe build you own acoustics for making better aspect on your sound , maybe dont dl so many vsts, stick with a synth and study some sound synthesis, be obsessed about it as much as you can, make it your own , dont stick with the loops, search for other ways to develop a track
Sometimes you stuck cause you think you have stuck and you probably push yourself too hard and rush, take your time, which unfortunately is one of the most precious things, you can never have enough, make a break and then give sounds more weight and importance...
dont feel dissapointed just like that, its better to feel angry with yourself and push your creativity and imagination than just give up after so much time and emotional energy...And after all the music never dumps you YOU dump the music from within..
dont give things up, sometimes i feel alone too, no buddies in music production or interest, no friendships with ppl of the scene (artists/dj's) , i even went to SAE to study audio engineering and found finally they tough you almost shit (almost), the biggest part of the work has to be done on your own , thats the same everywhere in everything in the world , very few people stand by and help if you got some youre lucky, theres no help out there, it is always a struggle that never ends.
if you feel like giving up, do it, but i really believe that youre gonna feel so much empty after that, like you lost the girl of your dreams ..there are so many ways and motivations to keep you on my2c (more then 2 but anyway )

Try to make a track in a different style, don't stick to psytrance, or what you are making i don't know.           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

Don't get depressed too much.
Please concentrate on the good things in your life and give time for everything to happen.

Thinking that you may or may not achieve something in the future should bother you less, when the prime thought should be just what you currently want to achieve (now or tomorrow). If you question what you want or if you are confused, let time solve your confusion and don't get depressed by it.

Remember that it just might be a bad phase....

simply take a break for a few weeks, inspiration will come           https://soundcloud.com/hazak

Only suggestions, but what works for me is to get out of the setting for while. If i'm stagnating with the music flow these are examples of what usually gets the mojo back:

1) go to a seriously good party in another town, with a good line up and make it an adventure, then party like theres no tomorrow and one or two days later feel refreshed to try new things remembering tunes that stood out at the party as a starting point.
Alternatively order a sample cd on friday....go partying over the weekend....then by tuesday or the following weekend when you have recovered you are surprised to receive a new sample cd with a whole lot of new sounds etc & hopefully you've been inspired by the music at the party too.

2) get away even into nature. No computers, phones etc returning with a new perspective.

3) Get out of the routine of laying down tracks. Presets can be a pitfall. Why not learn one or two synths inside out. Sculpt new sounds. Instead of trying to make tunes, spend a week (once you have learnt the synth) making a library of sounds then use those to make a track later - but focus on the synth rather than the music making program.
Even if it means uninstalling you music prog and all the effects and instruments then start again only putting the minimal instruments and fx.

I think the main thing is to give the music making a break for a while and try new things (on both the music making front and things in general)

hey here is some stuff that worked for ME (maybe will help you too):

1.finish goddam track!
it might not be your masterpiece but you will have to work out of your loop and this will be great start.
get into the hole track building proccess.. nothing has to come out on cd at the moment , just get it going....

2.better inspiration:
if you listen to "normal" trance music i can see why you are dipressed.. get your hands on the real goodies like giiwa or vertigo (insert your favorite label) compilations and figure out why its so much better and inspiring then anything else , if that doesnt work i would turn to squarepusher lol
oh and also , that old great music never got any worse since then , listen to your old favorite stuff...

3.make other genre of music is great as well

4.get dayjob if you dont have one... or vacation.. some time away always makes me so eager to make noizZ!!!

I took 3 years off from music, even listening to electronic music on and off for 3 years. It has given me a fresh start with the knowledge from before but the insipiration from today. I hope your empty head doesnt last for 3 years but sometimes a break is needed. I hop you will find your source of inspiration again.

The best suggestion is already mentioned here: try another style! Slower styles make you less bored and are good for instance pleasure/achievement.

Don't listen to electronic music for a while (it tends to frustrate me when I'm in a lesser creative period.)           http://www.soundcloud.com/bandarlog

yeah, to echo A.Rosengren, i once had no access to a computer for music for 6 months; even listening to music was far and few between - nevermind trance music. At first it was like the end of the world...but amazingly after 2 months and going to a trance party - my gosh!!! It was like hearing it for the first time again, could really hear and 'see' each part of the track. Needless to say when it came back to music making the whole perspective had shifted and it was thanks to the slow down that - for the first time - i started slowing down the music making process which gave the tunes a more mature, professional sound.

It's a good thing you don't have any inspiration... it means you have the soul of an artist (as opposed to just a technician) and can't write music if you don't have anything to say. Many people seem to churn out track after track, but all too often the it sounds to me like they're just exploring the technology, rather than using it to write the music that's in their head and their heart.

Embrace your fear of not being able to write... take some of the advice given here and leave it alone for a while, have some life experiences, do stuff you've always wanted to do. Eventually you will find the music comes back - and if it doesn't, well, better to have had the experience, enjoyed it, done good work and been honest about its ending, than to try and flog a dead horse. I have had this state at times (and still do every now and then).

When it is like you describe, I stop everything, and don't touch it whatsoever. It may take days, sometimes weeks and one time it even took 2 months, then something took over and I went for it again.

And don't worry about the so called artists who shell out one track after another. Have you listened to the main stream psy lately? It sounds like technology, no soul in there. I am with you Colin on this one...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

I haven't been independently creative for much much longer than I'm willing to state on a public forum...

Yes i agree with what most people have already said. Take a break from making music!

This happens to me sometimes & after i've taken a long break, one day i'll be sitting & will have this sudden really strong urge to make some music. Then whenever i sit to write something the music writes itself!           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

My advice:

- Do other type of art just to refresh your mind: write, draw, paint, play with clay, anything non musically creative.

- When doing that think of a story. A story about you maybe, a friend, a lover, a family member, a pet, a world, a universe, anything. Think about tension and resolution in that story. Think about how that story could be represented with music.

- Go back to the studio, create a 6 minute bassline, then if your host allows color your loops in a creative way inspiring to tell the story. Create audio/midi tacks and name them after characters in your story... tell the story, make the characters interact.

- Think of your 6 minute bassline as a canvas where you will paint your musical story. If you feel like making the intro then go to the start and do it, if you feel like creating a chorus, zoom into where you'd like the chours to be and just change the bass and add the magic. This way you can just move around your unfinished track filling gaps according to what you feel like doing in that moment. if you don't like it don't erase just drag the unused loops to another place and let them rest, you'll find your 6 minutes filled with ideas in no time.

- Create or find 3 presets you love. And stick to them, like if they were the only instruments you had, make them work together, evolve, twist and shout.

And understand that creative blocks are something normal and healthy to your art. Most times is just the signal of another chapter of your creative life just begining / ending. Find inspiration in life and in your heart so you can create trance for those intentions.

good luck
