as have I, but the process of learning your synth design in a deliberate method has really helped me spend more time on developing new techniques for synthesis.

And Mr. Gilmour might not change his fender, but you can bet your ass he changes which pedals he's using on it...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

yeah, that's true.

it also depends on the synth, i suppose - 5 minutes with a Virus is very different from 5 minutes with FM8

im sure gilmor uses different pedals but thats like using different fx on the same patch..not using different patches imo..

i still say-do waht ever you like..but if you start every patch from init..5 min arnt allways enough..WITH OR WITHOUT VIRUS

That is true... the main point he was trying to get across is when you get stuck on a sound and you're trying everything to work that sound properly and you're really getting no where. You need to cut your losses and try something different.

IMHO, creativity need to flow like a steady stream of consciousness from you through the medium. sometimes you get lost in the semantics of things and you forget the reason why you were making this sound or what relationship that part you spent an hour on has in the story of the tune. That's why being able to work quickly and effectively can be a benefit. Not saying all should be like this, we all know that if you work quickly it can come out either way, but knowing how things work can really help you create more complex things in less time. And when you spend an hour on a sound, it's not gonna be something that a preset can do.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

I save my presets sometimes because I sometimes realy miss them. Very often its a good start for something new, you always need a point to start with, so you can take an old preset and modify it, exchanging the wave of an osc for example and you get a different sound but with well suited setups around it allready.
another example i use a allways the same kickdrum since early 2008 and it sonds better in every new track, because it slightly gets better as workflow this year goes. (an 808 kick - not easy if you have used thoose 909s for years) maybe 2-3 tracks more maybe and it will as asskicking where i want it to be. so i want to say sometimes its good to stay close to own elements you use often, making them better everytime you work on them.

many artists DOES sound pritty much the same with many of their tracks (also if they dont admit it) , even if evry single sound is new , cause thats their mind and what they are after.

so notice that , i do save the best presets in evry track , not cause i cant do it again in "5 minutes" but for my live show and for saving time while working in studio , and also i think it makes sense to have consisnt upgrading sound quality - meens once u got something good go only better , expiriment for sure , but if that one old kick really sounds better then the new would u use the new only cause its new ?
