i don't save no preset by the time doing it... (although, once it's in the track it's already a preset, only not 'saved as preset')

if i think i need something like 'that lead' in 'that track', i'll go save it then and use it..

though i have re-used only a little of my presets so far.           extreme

I do save my presets, and sometimes use them in several projects but never without tweaking them properly to fit with the track. I mean, i never use the same preset twice but i use them as ideas or colors that can fit in other tracks. Then i can learn from em and create new things...

I don't save my instrument presets but I do save FX settings sometimes, generally when I need to transfer the same sound to another instance of the same plugin, like when you need to swap plugins over in SX3, or when I want to take an insert plugin and apply it offline instead. That's just within the same project though so the name of the setting isn't important; most of my plugins have a preset named '1'!           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

i save instrument/effect Racks in Ableton.

if i've spent an hour getting a kick drum just right, it's nice to have the total plugin chain as well as an exported .wav!

same goes for 'building block' racks... e.g. i know that 9 times out of 10 my tracks will have a hihat multisampler with a highpass EQ, a stereo widener, gentle compression, maybe a reverb. so i have a 'hats' rack which features three or four plugins already set to a basic standard setup.

I always save my presets. I'm sure most artists do anyway, most of the them have the same sound going for them in a majority of their tracks.

i save the patches in my Virus... and i save my Crystal2 patches, and z3ta too. if you like sound design (i do) and you spend a lot of time writing patches (i do) then you may also like to recall your work (i do).

there is a difference between saving your patches and recycling them i probably have over a thousand patches saved!

Yes.... It was instilled in me by Ocelot. The first time we wrote music together he told me that I couldn't use presets, and if I couldn't make the sound in 5 minutes, you couldn't make it at all... kinda helped me in a sense.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

Is funny
The electronic music genre with the largest variety of sounds per track and no one saves presets....

I save ones I worked long to tweak but "if you can't get it in 5 mins it's not the right way" idea is a very smart concept (imo)

We've reached a similar idea from a different angle once when we defined a good effect or instrument as one you can get what you're after in 5 mins. If you fight it, it's probably not the right one....

nice thread
