Hi guys,

I've been learning to dj for about a month and a half now. I've learned more about music here than any other place in my life. I can beat and phrase match just fine, but I am still wondering about the structure of psytrance music.

Most modern music has an intro, verse n(where n is an integer > 0), chrous n, verse (n+1), chorus n+1,....., outro. I've easily noticed it in mainstream trance, but I only can find intros, outros, verses, and what seems like no choruses in psy. Are choruses even present in psytrance music??

Can someone break down the basic song structure down for psy?

Also a few more questions:

What the hell are leads??

I hear people always saying something about leads in music, but I don't quite follow. Can someone break this down for me and give ma an example.

-I'm trying to learn more on audio effects. I know about some things but not enough. I'm an electrical engineering student(don't laugh), but I am not an audio engineering student. Therefore, I'm clueless on some of the techniques(LFOS,ADSR,etc) used in making electronic music. I've learned about the mathematics on audio signals(convolution, fourier transform, blah, blah, blah), but it's not really the same as actual experimental work. If anyone can give me a link that talks about audio effects and what they do, IN REGULAR PERSON LANGUAGE, that would be nice. I checked the FAQ's thread here and went to an audio effects website, but their definitions are hard to understand for a beginner like myself.

Any help would be nice.

a lead is the sound that is in the spotlight.,
it's the thing you wait for.,
it's the storyteller.,.,
but not always.,

about effects.,
look here for an explanation of most common fx :

No structure!
Well, most psy trance tracks are like this:
intro buildup explosion break buildup explosion outro
most are 30%, the rest 70% are exceptions.
Just listen and hear what it goes like.

Keep it interesting, keep it developing, keep it flowing. The structure will write itself if you follow these guidelines.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

meaningful contrast. that's the simple answer. and if you want a technical one, sit down with 20 psytrance songs, copy down their structure as they play, and then collate that data to determine what the most popular structure decisions are. a lot of people cringe at that, but art is half tech and half voodoo. and half of the voodoo is in learning to respect the tech as much as the voodoo. if you have designs on releasing music for other people "just do what you feel" could not be farther from the truth. especially in psy. psy is amazing music, but one thing it is not, is freeform. freeform was the 1970s acid rock.
