Hi
I'm going to buy a laptop for creating psytrance. Many have recommended Apple over PC.
So all of you experienced music producers, please share your knowledge!

PC vs. Apple?
Soundcard?
Memory?
Screen size?

My only equipment in addition to a computer I now use, is a microphone. Probably in the future I'm going to get a synthetizer.

And so on, whatever you can share with me. I don't want to go to the shop and ask the salesman ; )

pentium M 770 (and the number is very important, pentium M 740 is not nearly as good as the 770's), or an athlon 64, or a dualcore processor. classic P4 processors are good too. Dodge the celerons, durons, and any other cheap crappy cpu with architecture that has been handicapped compared to the processors they were based on.

at least 1Gb RAM (as fast as possible... Your data-bus should run at the highest possible speed you can find, and ofcourse, the RAM has to be the same speed or you have to slow down the data-bus, something that again hadicaps your pc).

HD's for laptops always suck... Because of heat and energy measures. So it doesn't matter... Just try to get 2 inside it, so you can install windows/linux/macos on the first, your programs on the second, that will improve performance. Use an external (or third internal) HD for your data. That's is the best setup performance-wise for HD's.

Don't skimp on the gfx card!!!!! Even if u don't want to play games, a bad graphics card can be really irritating (low resolutions, no dual-head, jumpy scrolling, ugly colors, bad contrast,...).

don't get one with a soundcard, only if you don't have a choice... If you do have a soundcard, disable it.

Get an external soundcard (fw or usb, doesn't matter) or a very good pcmcia card (like the indigo). Make sure that it fits in your laptop-bag or in a rack (if it fits in a rack, you can buy a rack-bag for it).

Don't look at how big the screen is, the bigger the screen, the heavier the laptop, what you want is a laptop that is as light as possible.

that's it i think...

Is Creative Sound Blaster® Audigy® 2 ZS (PCMCIA) in which position considering the top ten of soundcards for music production?

It's about in position 45.

My advice would be to go with a Centrino PC laptop. A decent-spec P4 sounds like a hairdryer in the studio, take it from me. Also Alienware are overpriced for the spec IMO.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering
