personally i was struggeling between two concepts.
do you choose something with a meaning, e.g. carbon based lifeforms (which i find quite nice and good sounding)
or do you go for something that is an artificial word creation that just sounds nice and the way you want like e.g. shpongle?
i still do not now what to do. it helps if you do not release music, you do not have to decide
for sure i do not want the name to be connected to a style or something you fancy now what is hip or cool or so.. you will regret that for sure some time in the future
leets keeo searching.. i go with medea and wait for the inspiration to come to me ;-) |

I've been having the same trouble for a long time too. Psylevation is just a name I use on the internet, I've had no intentions of using it as my artist name.
I was considering just going with my own name "Airyck".
When thinking about it for an extended period of time once I thought that I'm too many things to be called one idea. So if I don't use my own name, Airyck, then I'll probably use something that I've made up with no particular meaning.

You should make your artists name "The Internet" so when people are listening to your music they can say they're listening to the internet. DJs will be able to play the internet as well. People can discuss wheter or not they like the sounds of the internet.

Have you ever seen the fantastic British comedy "Peep Show"
The character Superhans says that they are going to call their group 'Various Artists' just to "fuck over people with Ipods"
Hahaha

I tihnk that the most improtant thing
is that when you think of your name
or when you say it, it will sound natural to your ear.
Like it was supposed to be your name, just 4 you
Now say the magic words: Bleep Bleep Deep Deep Wham..... |

Or you could just not care, lol.
That's what I did with my name. After I had been using it for a few years I learned that there was another psytrance producer named Axis Mundi who released stuff nearly 10 years ago. But the project had been inactive for quite some time after that and I couldn't get people to stop calling me "Axis", even when they knew my real name. So I just kept on using it, lol, and the only problems I ever deal with are sites like Lastfm.com whose databases are not set up to differentiate two instances of one artist name.

Food for thought... Infected Mushroom stole their name from an Israeli punk band. Roughly at the time of "Converting Vegetarians", said punk band sued said psytrance act and lost, mainly since said punk band never had any releases or official documentation implying ownership of the name.

It will probably come to you when you are not actively thinking about it.
A few suggestions:
1. Always keep a notebook handy to write down anything and I mean anything that might sound useful either alone or in combination with something else.
2. Go to the bookstore and find anything on a subject you are interested in. I picked up a book on the 100 most essential mathematics principles and equations once I got about ten possible names for tracks.
3. Combining several words together might be the answer if you are having trouble with single names or phrases. Use your notes to try combinations of words that might have never ben thought of before.
It is not easy sometimes - I probably have a dozen names that other people would like but do not pass my own 'strength test'. I am trying to settle on something that denotes my love of the natural sciences and the plight of the earth's ecosystems today but so far no luck.
My two cents is it's better to wait until you can be really pleased with your new identity because your enthusiasm will rub off on your music and fans.
